Yes, but actually getting together 400 million ISK is more than I can do. The most I ever managed was about 120 million, and I used that up buying my Hulk and fitting it.
You must be going back fairly soon, it doesn’t really take that long to train up for Hulks. Well, the drone skills can take a bit, but you do know not to bother with the Harvester drones right? I have thought about going for an Orca, it would only take me just under 10 days right now. But that is 2 more expensive skills to buy. Which is why I have a hard time saving money. And right now I am leaning toward pickup up Heavy Assault Ships. They just suck up my money faster than I can make it.
Sounds about right to me. But more fun than a real job.
I have been playing WoW pretty consistantly since it released.
I play CoH/V sometimes but have not bothered to keep the subscription active since i do not have time to play both that and WoW.
I tried Pirates of the Burning Sea in Beta and got a subcription when it went live played it for a while, but got sick of SOE screwing up the balance in the game and figured out that there is no way to be an effective solo/part time gamer in that system. Everything revolved around being in a group and the economy required that players work in groups to actually make anything of value. Not a good situation for someone who cannot make a game a second full time job.
At the moment the Hulk alts have just under 7 million skill points. They can’t use harvesters but they still have quite a way to go before they’ve maximized their mining skills. They can use T2 without any fitting/cap problems now though. I just picked the most popular Hulk setup on Battleclinic (through EVEMon) and aimed for that. I hope the Veldspar market is as good now as it was a few months ago, heh. I don’t know what to do with them after they’ve trained most of their skills. One could branch in to a production alt I suppose. Maybe they can both become R&D alts? I don’t know. Whatever pulls in the ISK! Three accounts are expensive, they need to start paying for themselves.
My main wasn’t too far away from an Orca, it was the leadership skills that took ages (Mining Foreman/Director V). He has terrible Charisma.
I tend to take long breaks from EVE from time to time. That gives me a chance to train the long skills that I otherwise wouldn’t (like Minmatar BS V)…
Is there a guide somewhere for how to play EVE free? Or is that even possible? I might be interested in starting up an account, but I’d like it to be completely free from the start.
Ahh, sorry. There’s no trick involved. You can buy game time codes ingame. I’m not sure of the price but it’s about 300-400 million for 30 days IIRC. That’s far far beyond most new characters.
Well, you would have to pay for at least the first month or two until you get your skills up to the point of being able to handle whatever path you took to the money. Probably the easiest way to get the money is mining, which means hours of sitting in an asteroid field chomping rocks. You can also do it running level 4 missions, but you need to grind a corporation running level 1-3 missions until they like you well enough to give you the really lucrative ones.
Trading is also a viable way to it, and Finns site EVE Tribune just ran some articles on breaking into that field.
I have to admit, I could probably earn the ISK to play for free if I just spent a solid week mining and selling the minerals. But right now I am into the occasional mission run and some trading. You know what they say about a jack of all trades.
This seems as good a place as any to mention that Darkfall Online is supposedly launching its North American servers today or tomorrow. I intend to get in on that in a few weeks if anyone else is game.
So am I the only one who’s played A Tale in the Desert? (Along with WoW, which I currently play)? Lots of player-created content, and totally nonviolent, which is amusing. But it has one major major flaw that will keep me from going back: you really have to have 2 to 3 hours of time, minimum, at a stretch to play the game.
Currently playing City of Heroes. Played it way back at launch, quit right before CoV beta and just picked it back up a month or so ago.
Once played: Everquest, Lord of the Rings Online, WoW, FFXI and a host of lesser games or betas. I’m kind of burnt out on the swords 'n sorcery thing since they all feel like some permutation of Everquest.
I’m just the Editor in Chief, Mr. M started it/runs the server.
And yeah, I’ll bump an EVE thread so we don’t have to clutter this one up. It’s easy enough to make the ISK required to fund an account or two. Three is pushing it, but doable. I wouldn’t want to try more than that.
I used to enjoy DnD online, it didn’t require as much of an investment in time as WoW and the rest. And as it’s going free to play from next month I might take another crack at it.
I used to play FFXI, but had my fill of it. I switched to WoW, which I prefer by far (Shadowsong Horde). I tried EVE for a few weeks; it seems good, but I didn’t want to split my gaming time between two MMOs.
I’m paying some attention to Star Wars TOR, but I have no idea whether the gameplay will be any good.
Why do you say that? It looks interesting to me. I like any game where you can build an empire. WoW looks horrible to me, Darkfall looks somewhat interesting.
It definitely looks interesting on the surface. Then I took a look at the details. Aside from the unpolished graphics and somewhat strange UI, the quest mechanics are pretty bad, and whoever cooked up the “rogue” mechanic just needs to be shot.
Apparently, if you injure or kill someone of your own race or alignment, you can become a “rogue” and be killed by others of your race without incurring the same penalty. On the surface, this sounds like it could be a fun gameplay decision. But the kind of play it engenders is retarded. Many melee attacks, for example, are AoE. So other players will run up to you while you are in combat and try to get in your way so that you accidentally injure them. If you light up a friendly and become a “rogue”, you are fair game to be killed on the spot without penalty.
Some people think this is an exciting, refreshing, immersive sandbox experience. I think it sounds incredibly irritating. When dominant strategies turn on the unintended consequences of game design and violate the flavor of the game, I lose interest real fast. Would you believe this game was in development for six or seven years?
