I’ve often wondered whether that was Paltrow’s fault, or the director. The movie was a 1930s throwback, and should have had a fast-talking, full-steam-ahead female lead as Polly, someone like Katharine Hepburn or Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday. It’s like all the effort went into making the movie look right (and it was stunning), and not enough into the characters.

The irony is that a young Blythe Danner would have been perfect.

I used to blame her but have come to think it’s a personal bias. She’s perfectly serviceable in the Iron Man movies. Instead of a cooler Marion Ravenwood we got an even more stupid and insipid Willie Scott. Blythe wouldn’t’ve stood for it!

This is the perfect answer to the thread. I saw the original stage show once on Broadway, and twice in Toronto. Note that the original stage show took place totally on a Broadway stage, during auditions; and I eagerly looked forward to the movie.

Boy, was I disappointed. **ThelmaLou** has hit most of my complaints, but I’ll add that the whole Cassie-Zach storyline in the middle of the stage show (“The Music and the Mirror”) was a surprise to the audience. In the movie (as I recall; it’s been years since I saw it), it was a thing from the beginning, thus robbing the movie of a powerful plot point.

I’d like to see the people who made “Zardoz” do it again with the wisdom they later gained. (But Sean Connery has to be his young, luscious self in the remake.) That was a terrible movie, but it had a heart and could have been wonderful in slightly more adept hands. IIRC, the makers of the film said as much themselves.

Sorry for another Ayn Rand recommendation, but “We the Living”.

No argument that Ayn Rand wrote inhuman philosophy, but she did write scenes with an eye as to how they would look on the big screen.

I haven’t seen all of Paltrow’s movies. Does she ever play a character who’s tough and decisive? She has moments in the Iron Man movies when she stands up to Tony, but she still seems reluctant to step up and take charge. Maybe she just can’t play that sort of character.

I do have another beef with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow; the action scenes are too video-gamey. I miss the days when movies had fights or chases between just two people. You could see the tactics and tell who was winning. In SCatWoT and too many modern movies, the villain just throws thousands of henchmen or robots at the good guys, and the question is whether the hero can shoot them all fast enough. There’s no dramatic tension in swatting at a cloud of gnats.

> Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a 2003 American epic period war-drama film co-written, produced and directed by Peter Weir, set during the Napoleonic Wars. The film's plot and characters are adapted from three novels in author Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey–Maturin series, which includes 20 completed novels of Jack Aubrey's naval career. The film stars Russell Crowe as Aubrey, captain in the Royal Navy, and Paul Bettany as Dr. Stephen Maturin, the ship's surgeon. This is the second...

It was a good movie, but I think they could have developed the world geopolitical stage a lot better, to develop this into a **full series** like the books evolve into.

Tripler
Don’t get me started on the _Star Trek_ reboots.

Thank you for that validation. Since I’ve found a kindred spirit, I’ll go ahead with my gripe about “What I Did for Love.” The movie made it about Zach-Cassie, but it’s supposed to be about what the dancers do/did for the love of dancing! AAGGHH!

Spoons, you MUST watch the documentary “Every Little Step”! You will eat it up with a … well, a _spoon_. Or maybe more than one. 😁 Marvin Hamlisch was a fucking genius.

The final remake of “7 Dec 1941”

IN 1932 Rear Admiral Harry Yarnell simulated a carrier based attack on Pearl Harbor using Lexington and Sarratoga cruising North East of Hawaii. The attackers dropped flour sack bombs and achieved complete success. That would make a good first half of the movie, then it could work up to the fact that defense of Pearl Harbor was an Army mission in 1941. The Army made elaborate preparations to repel an amphibious attack. That activity and Army confusion during the attack would make up the second half. A great scene would be Japanese aircraft overflying soldiers in trenches. Of course it ends with the navy getting the blame.

At least it wouldn’t be same ole same ole

They should remake _The Last Airbender_ but find actors who would do a reasonably good job of acting like the characters from the show.
