yeah so i am a girl, but i guess i’m a hardass because nothing ever makes me cry…so i decided i’d post. i’ve sat through dancer in the dark, the iron giant, life is beautiful, most of these movies you guys named, and never shed a tear. not even close.
…which makes this all the more embarassing.
has anyone seen a walk to remember? just the part where the guy goes to his dad’s house to thank him…i don’t know why but it broke me down. i was thinking about it for ages. only movie that’s ever made me cry.
i’m pathetic.
A League Of Their Own - The song at the end killed me. “We are the members of an All-American Team, we come from cities near and far…” You know.
Another vote for Cinema Paradiso. It’s been many years, but I presume constantine is referring to:
At the end, the main character receives a gift that was left to him by the old projectionist after his death – it was a 35mm reel with all of the kisses that he’d been obliged to edit from the films when he was alive.
I saw the film Brazil a couple of weeks ago, and it surly evoked a tear at the very end:
The last five-ten minutes of the film show the main character being rescued by the film’s “hero” and being returned to the woman he loves… In the last few seconds we see that it was a dream; his torturers look at each other and say:
Helpmann: He’s got away from us, Jack.
Jack: Afraid you’re right, Mr. Helpmann, he’s gone.
I was in an odd mood for the rest of that day.
It’s been mentioned at least once, but here’s mine, and why:
The Patriot with Mel Gibson.
Not the whole movie, but one particular scene, with his youngest daughter. You see, I have a daughter about that age, and I travel a lot, so when she
finally breaks down and shouts to her dad as he’s about to leave again, with tears running down her face, “Don’t go Daddy! I’ll say anything just don’t go!”
Well, that scene just kills me every time! Tears, blubbering, gotta go give the youngest daughter a big hug right then, the whole nine yards…
I forgot about A Perfect World. I love that movie.
Has anybody seen Antwone Fisher? You should at that to your list.
I forgot about it and am kind of afraid to admit it but Sister Act 2 makes me cry when they are doing their performance at the end.
glory.
my number 1 movie of all time for a reason.
One might think that they started making movies in 1970, from reading this thread (apart from Old Yeller).
The two that I don’t want to see, for fear of losing my cool (again) are:
The Ox-Bow incident
and
Waterloo Bridge
Speaking as a man, I cried in The Blues Brothers, when the Bluesmobile fell apart.
After all, it had cop shocks, cop brakes, a cop motor, and it was built before catalytic converters so it could run on regular leaded gas!
I’ll bet you get misty-eyed at “Cat’s in the Cradle” too.
I didn’t know the Ox-Bow incident was a movie! I just read the book 2 1/2 years ago (mostly in installments while waiting for Jerseydiamond to get off work for our dates, just after I met her
) and it was great.
How does the movie compare?
Okay, here’s a weird one where the ending got me a little teary-eyed the other day.
Fantasia 2000
The Stravinsky music is just so inspiring and the animation done so beautifully it brought me to tears.
Titanic, but not for the normal reasons. The scene that got me was when the robot was ‘flying’ through the hallway, and the scene morphed to what the ship used to look like – it was gorgeous. sniff
Saving Private Ryan – I saw this with one of my friends. I got real misty, but maintained. My comment to him was that I wasn’t sure if the movie was supposed to be a tearjerker, or to prove to you that your grandpa is a bad-ass.
Toy Story 2 – that song.
Babe – “That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.” And, Farmer Hoggett’s song when Babe is sick.
James and the Giant Peach – “My name/Is James…”
A.I. – the whole 2nd ending. (The “first” ending was the Kubrick ending, imho. The “second” ending was the Spielberg ending. Both of them weep-worthy.)
If TV shows can count, I’d nominate the Buffy episode where Dawn wasn’t the new Potential, just for Xander’s speech at the end. “You’re not special. You’re extrordinary.”
Gonna go watch Grave of the Fireflies now. Wish me luck.
A Walk to Remember…Oh shut up! I know its a chick flick but its got Mandy Moore in it! She’s hot! Sue me.
Princess Mononoke…its just such an amazing movie
Escaflowne…another anime, but very touching.
I know its not a movie, but the most powerful ending of a story IMO was the end of Cowboy Bebop: the 26 episode anime series. Anyone who has seen it knows exactly what I am talking about. One word: “Bang…”
Holy crap I totally missed that. I’m sorry! I would like to also agree with Contact. Very moving.
But yeah…Cowboy Bebop…I was in that dazed state for atleast a day.
I can’t believe I don’t see Gladiator on every post. “go to them” That is the only one that really gets me going.
Please don’t tell anyone.
I HAVE NO youngest daughter, no kids PERIOD and DIDN’T EVEN WATCH THE WHOLE MOVIE!!! I just happened to be walking past the TV when my sister was watching the movie and I got a little misty.
Among the others…
When a Man Loves a Woman
Saving Private Ryan
Pearl Harbor
The TV show Once and Again did it too on multiple occations.
Aw, my husband breaks down every time when he watches the that movie too. A man having to put down his best friend, yeah, I get choked up about that myself.

Oh, if television counts, there have been several moments of Six Feet Under which have brought tears to my eyes.
I almost cried at the very beginning of the new season premiere last night, when they were only showing the “previously on Six Feet Under” scenes.
i have to play this too because i have never been so affected by a movie as these two:
Breaking the Waves - I just lay on the coach sobbing after it was over and a friend dropped in and thought that someone had died. It took me about 5 minutes to explain it was just a movie.
Celebration (Festen) - I saw this in the theatre and afterwards it was all silent with people just crying quietly together. There aren’t any particular “lines” that get you… it’s just that the acting is so bloody good that you believe in the suffering of the characters.
