What new Federal holiday would you like to see?

In Canada I would love a four-day “escape from the dark” long weekend in late February that all citizens get as a stat holiday.

Nitpick: the landing was on July 20.

Election Day should be a national holiday. Only make it on a Monday before election day and make Monday and Tuesday mandatory to have polls open all day. Start at 6 am Monday and go through to 10 pm Tuesday without a break.

But we need one for August. Poor August has no celebrations at all.

I still think we’d be better off scrapping the notion of “Election Day” altogether and going with a month-long voting period.

Election Day as a holiday should be left up to the states.

Besides, why should workers in the seven states that have all mail-in voting get an extra day off?

That’s very good.
We don’t have such an enlightened and new age acknowledgement to the people’s democratic principles on this side of the ditch.
We just hold all elections on Saturdays.

What, waste a perfectly good Saturday with voting? sod that! Let the employer take the hit!

Sidebar: one office that I was associated with would always hold their Christmas staff party on a Thursday night. “Why not Friday?” I asked, innocently. “Because who wants to be hung over on your day off!” was the reply.

Sounds like you are spending far too long in a queue at the polling booth.

At my local polling booth, the local school approx 120m away one of the locals sets up a coffee cart outside the precinct.
You place your order, go and vote and when you come out your coffee is ready to have with your democracy sausage.

Community service, community engagement and funds raising is one neat package.
Plus the election coverage is one of the best nights on TV.

This I agree with. Many in the private sector and local governments routinely have the day off, why can’t us Federal workers?

For having the good sense to elect a state government that gives all people equal access to the ballot box.

As I said, it should be up to the states, not the feds. If a state already has all mail-in voting, they needn’t bear the costs and inconvenience of another holiday.

My birthday is in August. Maybe we could all celebrate that!!!

Sounds like you want to prevent Jews and Seventh-Day Adventists from voting.

Yeah . . . because August SUCKS!

You really do have to admire the industrial strength effrontery for a ‘merkin, with all the inherent smug, unworldly certitude and pomposity nea Trumpist superiority getting their jollies through a post of a glib, crass, grubby, sectarian, bigoted sledge about voter suppression.

My birthday is also in August and I have always wanted an August Holiday.

Maybe every month should have a “Birth Month” holiday. So you get a day off in the month of your birth. Even better, you get the whole month off!

Hell, if you’re gonna dream!

I agree with this, emphatically. Any discussion of Election Day as a holiday is old-fashioned thinking and necessarily obstructs the better reform of federally mandating a longer election period (with early tabulation).

As I’m in Europe and I have a generous allowance of national holidays and vacation time, I don’t feel like I have a meaningful opinion on what other U.S. holidays could be added. But I have a very strong opinion in opposition to the Election Day concept.

Instead of the current system of a holiday spotted here and there throughout the calendar - I would be in favor of just having one BIG federal holiday that would stretch from Juneteenth to the Fourth of July. Call it the “liberty” or “freedom” celebration.

(OK. One exception. Keep Thanksgiving. Too many people would miss the “family get together and stuff yourself somnolescent” holiday.)

Oh no you don’t. The June 28th - July 5th period where it’s legal for civilians to set off fireworks in this state is long enough as it is. Don’t you dare give them an excuse to extend that period.

You’re correct. I was going by the 2:56 UTC on 7/21 that Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon as the date.

I sympathize. Around here unofficial fireworks season runs from June to September.

Modnote: Please attack the post and not the poster. @Bootb you did it above with your post also.
penultima_thule, you crossed a lot further into insulting outside of the pit. Do not do this again.
