They also had a little bit showing a bunch of people being turned down and then thanking the judges for their time, which they say rarely happens in other cities. ---

my guess is he was referring to some of the participants, many of whom were typically southern in a way that those unfamiliar with people from the deep south might find a bit odd- not like Deliverance scary, but in the same general ballpark. ---

I don’t think Hair Girl said anything explicitly about a church, but it might be a reasonable conclusion to draw, that she’s fairly churchified. Blah episode. Apparently lots of talent in Birmingham, to their chagrin, and the whack jobs were barely interesting. The most interesting thing was Paula 2.0. Apparently she’s switched from painkillers & Jack Daniels, to speed. She couldn’t even stay in her chair. (Or, this is what she’s really like when clean & sober). ---

The present tense is ambiguous. “Birmingham scares me” might be just a general comment about the city based on something other than the show. It always is amusing to hear our dear Yankee bretheren, bless their hearts, speculate about Southern bigotry and scariness. Apparently, they’ve never been to Philadelphia, Minneapolis, or Boston. ---

Even better are the ones: “I’ve never heard that song sung quite that way before.” “Thank you.” “No, no, that’s not what I meant.” And I almost bust a gut when instead of the usual “It’s a no, sweetheart” Simon said “It’s a NEVER!” ---

(And if I am _not_, then _someone_ has a LOT of explaining to do, beginning with the reproductive endocrinologist who has been trying to make me pregnant for the last 3 years.) And by “Birmingham,” I meant “some of the contestants in Birmingham,” not the actual city itself. Although I cannot now, at this particular moment, remember why I said that. The City of Birmingham seems perfectly lovely, and I am not backpedalling here, either: I was just _criminally_ unclear earlier. And, **Lib** , I am in fact a Philly girl (_… seriously_) who is also a Red Sox fan (_… no, seriously!_), and who has seen both teams play in their home stadiums. So I know from scary. What I don’t know, obviously, is specificity. Or tact. 😉 Never been to Minneapolis, though, so I’ll take your word for it, there. ---

Gah, you’d think that for a 50/50 odds thing like gender, I would get it right half the time by sheer blind luck. But in my nearly 8 years here, I believe I’ve made wrong guesses more than 80 percent of the time. Maybe 90. It all started back in '99 when I wrote an impassioned post defending DavidB and Gaudere against some agitator who was attacking them, all under the presumption that they were gay male lovers. It’s been downhill ever since. ---
