If you absolutely must list “rapping” as a hobby, at least make sure you spell it with the right number of "P"s. ---

This one is a true story: an applicant for a job I had to fill put on her resume that she had been the runner-up Miss Connecticut several years previously and was now active in organizing Miss America beauty pageants. No, I’m not saying she shouldn’t have put that on her resume; even though beauty pageants are not my thing I do understand that the case can be made that she was demonstrating poise, teamwork, organizational skills, etc. What she SHOULDN’T have done is to have coupled that information with a cover letter that began, “I saw your job opening and it got me all excited.” The men I worked with were highly in favor of granting her an interview. ---
