Zefferelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” from the 60’s - just exquisite in every way, costumes, music, actors.

For early talkie comedies: Try Ernst Lubitsch: Ninotchka, To Be Or Not To Be…

And Preston Sturges: Palm Beach Story, Unfaithfully Yours…

Has anyone mentioned The Philadelphia Story?

Many of the very best films do not fit nicely into a specific genre. Is the following really a war movie?

Excellent. And it reminds me of another excellent William Holden movie, _The World of Suzie Wong_, which in turn reminds me of _Sayonara_.

One of my very favorite films(\*), though again it may not fit into any of OP’s niches. Are _Suzie Wong_, _Sayonara_, and _Romeo and Juliet_ in the same genre as _Breakfast at Tiffany’s_ ? :dubious:

(\* - the script is first-class!)

Excellent movies keep popping into my head! OP rejects Hitchcock, and I also dislike some of his most famous films but there is much variety in Hitchcock’s work: _Dial M for Murder_ is excellent, as is _Rope_. Hitchcock’s _Vertigo_ is also good.

_Witness for the Prosecution_ is a good (courtroom thriller? noir?) if OP can tolerate black-and-white.
_Gilda_ is very good — it does help that the leading lady is _very_ easy on the eyes. 🙂

ETA: _Doctor Zhivago_ (1965) hasn’t been mentioned yet? :whack:

I’ve just thought of a good sci-fi for ya, Cowboys and Aliens.

This is wild.

Post/username combo a little too obvious.

If there is any “stuff like that” I would love to know about it.
I think dr. Strangelove is a unique masterpiece with little or no equals, I would love to be proved wrong
