After 20 years, I have been known to fall back on a buying a bottle of single malt, a box of dark chocolate, and a book about one of his areas of interest. Shows him I haven’t forgotten the occasion, am aware of his tastes and interests, and acknowledge that he needs to pick out big ticket items himself. The bj is always assumed and doesn’t need a coupon. ---

Some interesting ideas so far. I like the thought of the nookie book, no matter how old a man may be, there’s always a teenage boy inside hoping to get sum! I’ve decided to get him a coupon book for carwashes and waxes, and the big gift will be a Trip to the Kentucky Derby next year. He’s always wanted to attend and feels left out every First Saturday in May. I have a friend that is a bloodstock agent and has box seats available. So I’m going to book a room for a three-day weekend at a swanky Hotel and we’ll have box seats for two days. That’ll cover the Oaks and the Derby. I think he’ll be thrilled! It’s got to be on his bucket list. I wouldn’t have thought of it on my own. Thank you to **Girl From Mars** and **Magiver** for the “bucket list” angle. You have made my day! ---

My FIL just turned 80 - his sons got together and gave him a ride in a glider - he LOVED it! A friend gave her husband a flight in an aerobatic plane for his 60th. Yep, by the time you pass 40 or so, you own most of the toys you want, and experiences make great gifts! ---

Mr. Snicks is also hard to buy for, until I figured him out. Me, I’d rather get gifts that show you put some thought into things - one time, he bought me the latest novel of the author I’d been reading, and I was thrilled. Mr. Snicks is the opposite - he doesn’t really want a lot of things (the things we want, we tend to buy), and he’d rather not bother with shopping. This year, I bought him some new boxers and socks (among other gifts) for his birthday, and he was happy with both. (I’d consider both a rather crap gift, as I’d go get these myself if I needed them.) He was happy that he got something he needed but didn’t want to take the time or trouble to get himself. So, win win. ---

My last birthday, my gf got me an IPod touch. I _had_ an iPod (old school) and didn’t think I “needed” a touch, but my son convinced her otherwise. I’ve hardly put it down since I got it in February. ---

I agree with the experience gift. Then again, I’m one of those people who absolutely LOVES to throw things away. It’s really cathartic. Getting more stuff drives me nuts since I just buy most of the things I really want. ---
