The SDMB poster Giraffe decided to start his own. It was partly a schism over moderating and partly a concern that SDMB might shut down without warning and the community would just dissipate.
Many SDMBers joined as an emergency backup. Then SDMB got out of money trouble and has survived since. Meanwhile Giraffeboards sorta took off on their own.
For awhile there were some hard feelings but it seems nowadays the tone is mostly live & let live.
I lurked on Fark for years before becoming a “Liter.” I also go to Quora. My theory is that Quorans are really aliens from the Horsehead Nebula trying to understand how hoo-mons work. I used to love Television Without Pity (RIP) and the IMDb boards. I joined Reddit recently and am enjoying it so far.

Reddit definitely. Quality varies widely but quantity is huge. And if there isn’t a subreddit for your particular niche, create it. It’s also satisfying upvoting and downvoting comments.

I also like Flyertalk although the corporate ownership has dropped its quality over the last few years and they blatantly disregard the wishes of the participants which is annoying.
Lately I’ve been reading a lot of threads on the SomethingAwful forums.
I want to like Reddit and DailyWTF but their interfaces are annoying as shit.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED, to find that out.
