My ex-wife used to get things for free all the time. It’s true that there’s usually some flirtation/reciprocation involved, but not always. I was reminded of this just last week. She came to my office building to drop off some legal docs. She said she was hungry, so I took her to our cafeteria. The cashier, who never said a word to me in the 5 years or so that he’s worked here, was all of a sudden my best friend. He charged us for about half of the items that we had on our tray. ---

I hesitate to call myself ‘hot’, I think it’s bullshit to assign number values to a person’s looks, and I am a profoundly unflirty person as well as being somewhat shy (this has improved in recent years, I am more confident and friendly). But I’m a young, good-looking woman. Honestly I don’t know how many ‘perks’ this gets me. I try not to use my power for evil, and I’ve never tried to use my sexuality to get or get out of anything in particular. I’ve never gotten a ticket. But I have noticed some trends in my life: I always get hired pretty much instantly when I apply for a job (mostly the people doing the hiring are men). All men are always friendly and polite to me - well, until I take offense to bad behavior and call them on it, when some of them decide I am a bitch. Random men I encounter often try to do me favors or give me free stuff. If I ever ask a man to do me a favor (rarely) they usually jump to do it. These are all things I don’t get automatically from other women - however I like other women a lot, and I quickly win most over by being friendly and drama-free. ---

This sounds like the place to ask if someone knows of a study that’s been done. I assume someone else has had my idea and already done something like it. The idea: Take the UCLA yearbook (any large college will do) and have random men rank random women on attractiveness. The women will never see the rankings, so be brutal, boys. Now give those same women a survey about their attitudes toward self and the world. Correlate with “hotness” to see if hotness seems to give a more positive view. I really suspect there is. I worked with a teacher who still retained some hotness, and was probably a doubletake-er in younger years. My friend and I noticed how she unconsciously seemed to move easily into new social situations, including public speaking. I thought, “You know, she’s probably never really been rejected in a group. With a 8-9 attractiveness score and a nice personality, she’s almost in before she’s even arrived.” ---

Actually, there was a study referenced in another thread along exactly those lines (psychological profile of women/men who were objectively found to be attractive) but I’m deuced if I can remember the thread. ---

I can tell you based on my experience at a hospital that beauty is apparently a minimum hiring requirement for a lot of pharmaceutical company sales reps. When a gorgeous woman in professional dress walks through our hospital, she’s selling things to our doctors. Almost without fail. ---

An example Wilson likes to use is a woman who was rated a 3.25 before men got to know her, but after spending summer working with her they rated her a 7 because they liked her personality. At the same time a woman who is a 9 before you get to know her can drop to a 5-6 after you learn about her personality. Other studies he did included things like taking high school yearbooks and having strangers rate the photos vs. classmates and determining what role liking and respecting the individual played in attraction. I don’t know if its been studied, but I was under the impression that attractive women have lower self esteem. In many ways I could see that happening (in my personal experience, I didn’t really notice the difference between attractive and unattractive wrt self esteem and self worth), but it seems being attractive would give you more of an external locus of control which might make you more likely to have lower self esteem. Also, hot people get lighter prison sentences, but that is the halo effect which someone else talked about.
