My friends, like me, are too lazy to split a check. Somebody grabs the check, leading to some discussion. “Oh, you paid last time, give it to me”, “No, it’s my turn”, “I had more drinks than anyone else, I’ll pay”.
That’s how it typically goes among my friends here. One guy grabs the tab; someone else will grab it next time; nobody really keeps score. But with people who are acquaintances or otherwise very exact about getting the right amount of money back, e-payment has become the easiest way of dealing with this, as most restaurants around here don’t really like splitting checks, and most of us don’t really carry much cash anymore. (Get outside the metro area, though, and often the first question asked is “same bill or separate?”)
I’m not even talking about at restaurants though. (Rarely have I ever eaten at a restaurant in the past 3 year.) Someone orders food delivery for everyone hanging out and we all Venmo them our share.
