If you like Numberphile, you might like to hear Brady talking with CGP Grey on Hello Internet.
I listen mainly while driving, which has reduced greatly since I started working from home, but here are my mainstays:
True crime type
- Casefile
- Unsolved Murders
- Already Gone
Other
- Fairy Tales for Unwanted Children
- The Folklore Podcast
I listen while driving back and forth to see my granddaughter, who lives ~3 hours away, so plenty of time to listen.
These are the limited edition (e.g. distinct stories the have a beginning and end) podcasts that I’ve listened to and would recommend. Most are true crime:
Bear Brook
Dirty John
Dr. Death
Serial
S-Town
Gangster Capitalism (about the college admissions scandal)
Cold
The Shrink Next Door
To Live and Die in LA
Confronting OJ Simpson by Kim Goldman
These are ongoing subscriptions that I listen to if the topic intrigues me:
Noble Blood
RadioLab
History Unplugged
Armchair Expert
Getting Curious
Rick Steves Travel Talk
These are queued up for my next road trip:
Being There
Memory Palace
American History Tellers
When i’m in the mood i listen to podcasts while running. Mostly i listen to True Crime Stuff.
True Crime that i liked:
Serial (season 1 only, quit about half way through season 2)
S-Town
Someone Knows Something (seasons 1-5)
Dr. Death
Dirty John
Uncover: Escaping Nxivm
Cold (about the disappearance of Susan Powell)
True Crime Bullsh**: the story of Israel Keyes
Non true crime that i like:
Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History - Mostly i LOVED the Kings of Kings series about the Persian Empire. The other topics/episodes i haven’t been able to get into as much.
Radiolab
Moth Radio Hour
This American Life
I used to love the Nerdist/ID10T with Chris Hardwick (long form celebrity interviews), though i haven’t listened to it since the accusations against him were made.
Shunned - My favorite. (shameless plug)
Ear Hustle
Monday Morning Podcast
Beautiful Anonymous
Dumb People Town
Snap Judgment
Terrible, Thanks For Asking
The Drunk Mormon Podcast
The How-To Heretic
The Joe Rogan Experience (if a topic catches my interest)
The Pitch
The Side Hustle Show
Zealot
There are many more but those are on my current list. Every so often I’ll decide I want to listen to more business podcasts or stories or humor or whatever and I’ll switch over to other podcasts. Except Shunned, of course, that’s the best.
What’s a podcast?
I recently discovered podcasts and in addition to those already mentioned I can add:
Horse (discussion of pro-basketball primarily)
Pod Save America
Judge John Hodgman
Dammit! Nine years worth of episodes I need to catch up on? You are merciless.
Lately, I have been listening regularly to –
The Daily Zeitgeist
How Did This Get Made?
Behind the Bastards
Revisionist History
Punch Up the Jam
Unspooled
Mating Matters
99 percent Invisible
Quick Question with Soren and Dan
The Cracked Podcast
Imaginary Worlds
Lexicon Valley
Quentin Tarantino’s Feature Presentation
Oh, it’s not gonna get an A in a history class (or pronunciation class), but it gets an A in comedy class. I don’t listen to get the actual true story but a general idea and to hear whatever outlandish reaction Gareth is going to have as the horror of the topic dawns on him.
I’ve been listening to Futility Closet for a couple years, and worked my way through the back catalog. I even wrote to them and coined a term that they sometimes use on the show.
I listen to the Allusionist on occasion, and saw her do a live performance about a year ago.
Also very good. I’ll be seeing their live show in a couple months.
The only one I might add is Mission Log.
Politics based:
Rachel Maddow show
All in with Chris Hayes
Real time with Bill Maher
Pod Save America
The beat with Ari Melber
Stay Tuned with Preet
Fareed Zakaria GPS
It could happen here
Non-political:
Freakonomics
Fresh Air
Behind the bastards
Various TED talks
WTF with Marc Maron
Making sense with Sam Harris
Lore
The waking cosmos podcast
Hardcore history
The drug classroom
Crininal
Crime in music
Disgraceland
I just got into podcasts when I finally got a car with bluetooth. Right now I have only listened to the limited edition (mostly true crime) ones:
Dr. Death
Dirty John
The Shrink Next Door
Escaping NXIVM
The Dropout
Any others like these would be helpful-although I don’t like a lot of violence.
Only three:
The Rachel Maddow Show (I am a cord-cutter and can’t watch the show live)
Stuff to Blow Your Mind
Stuff You Missed in History Class
I listen to the Maddow show every day on my Amazon Echo. The other two I save for when I’m going to be driving for more than an hour.
Several, but my must-listens are:
Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me
Penn’s Sunday School (Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller; very interesting dude)
Slate Political Gabfest (despite David Plotz, who grates on my nerves)
My Favorite Murder (all you guys who listen to true crime should check this one out. It’s hilarious!)
Now Playing
Lexicon Valley
David Tennant Does a Podcast With…
A really old one, but…if you ever decide to re-visit Breaking Bad, check out the Insider Podcast. What stuck me is how such a dark show ended up with such an upbeat podcast. Besides the behind-the-scenes stuff, there’s a lot of laughter and genuine admiration for everyone who worked on the show. The same holds true for the Better Call Saul Insider podcast.
Omnibus!
My favorite and a don’t miss podcast. Ken Jennings & John Roderick are interesting, funny and erudite; and though they may hit a few alleys and byways before getting to their selected topic, the trip is always worth the wandering. Eclectic and intelligent; highly recommended! Also check out their Facebook page.
Of the below, those closer to the top I listen to regularly, those at the bottom are more occasional, when I feel inclined. Fwiw, I’m a skeptical septuagenarian female.
Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me
Ask Me Another
Hidden Brain
Reply All
Truth and Justice
Serial
Undisclosed
This American Life
Radio Lab
The Moth
99% Invisibile
Snap Judgment
The Allusionist
The History of Rome
The British History Podcast
Stuff You Missed in History Class
A Way with Words
The Infinite Monkey Cage
Clear and Vivid
Every Little Thing
The Sporkful
…and several whose names I don’t recall which no longer update.
My contribution: Casefile, but it’s been mentioned already.
This thread is frustrating to me. I see potentially a lot of good podcasts to listen to, but with just the titles I’m not sure. So, thanks to those of you who added a little summary. Also, I’d gladly stay away from anything political (left or right).
Also, on a somewhat related note… I’m an Android user; The Podcast Addict app is a HUGE battery suck. I need to find another app. Anyone care to make a suggestion of a good Android Podcast App?
My coworker told me about this one earlier this year…working hard to get caught up! On episode 102 this morning.
