Chevy or Buick
Peanut butter (jif or skippy or store ground)
Comet, the other ones just have weird powder “consistency” to me.
For cereal like some other dopers say above, I actually prefer the “cheap” generic brands. To me they’re more flavorful.

I think the Red Gold tomato thing is something that I grew up with. They were grown and canned about 50 miles from where we lived. I can taste the sunshine in them.
Trucks - Chevy. The only other kind of truck I’ve ever owned was one I hated. My Chevys have always lasted a couple of hundred thousand miles without much repair beyond the usual tires, brakes and oil changes.
Anything used in the bathroom
Advil
Philadelphia cream cheese
DiGiornio’s or California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizza
All laundry detergent
Hellman’s mayonnaise
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream
I’m a very picky eater and if I start eating something store brand and don’t like it, I’ll wind up throwing it all out, so it’s worth getting the name brand.
Best Foods/Hellman’s Mayo
Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust (used to be All Ready pie crust)
Q-tips
Scott bathroom tissue
Zip-lock bags
Kraft mac 'n cheese
Crystal Light drink powders
Old Bay seasoning
Bacon Salt
There are more, but that’ll do.
Bounty paper towels.
Coke Zero or Diet Pepsi.
Laundry and dish detergents.
I bought store brand “green” toilet paper once. Just once…
I know. She bought a shitload off eBay, at a pretty good price, when she first heard why she couldn’t find them at the store.
Joe
Raisin Bran - has to be Kelloggs; i’ve tried Post and a few others, but Kelloggs flakes are just somehow different and better.
Toilet paper - always get Scotts single ply. I hate toilet paper that feels like a fluffy cotton ball.
Dish soap - Palmolive seems to lather better than anything else.
Lately, for the dishwasher, we’ve also gone back to name-brand stuff like Cascade Complete. The “green” stuff just won’t get the glasses clean.
For toothpaste, i buy a brand name like Colgate or Crest, but i’m not especially loyal. I’ll just grab whichever one is cheapest at the time.
Gasoline
Mayo
Ginger ale
Power supplies
Mac & Cheese (generic stuff is often blandly mushy)
DVDs (my first spindle was some completely unlabeled brand, and was 100% coasters)
Kraft Dinner (mac 'n cheese)
Campbell’s Soup (for eating it as soup; if it’s used as an ingredient in another dish I’ll go off brand.)
Chef Boyardee
Fuji DVDs
Regular tea, has to be Tetley. Earl Grey - Twinings.
Astro balkan style yoghurt.
Lactantia butter
Carnation evaporated milk.
And flour… I buy the brand names not the generic, most recently bought a 10K bag of Five Roses because it was on sale. Bread just seems to turn out better somehow.
Adding in the non food category. Ariat boots. Not super expensive, but more than I would like to pay and totally worth it. Made for riding, but I buy them even though I don’t have a horse because they are the most comfortable boots ever and they last.
I’ll use store brands for many things, but my coffee has to be Yuban, and my bread has to be Oroweat.
Well, at least everything makes sense now. I moved to Colorado about 6 months ago, and have only managed to find my favorite OB Ultras once. I figured that people out West just had some perverse preference for full-length applicators.
I guess it was high-time I get a Keeper anyway.
love
yams!!
That reminds me…
Chaco sport sandals
Vasque hiking boots
Trek bicycles
Leatherman multi-tools
Smith sunglasses
Sweetwater water filter
Jetboil backpacking stove
Garbage bags. That was a mistake I only made once…
Thankfully (for me I guess), they still have them in France. Last time I was there, I bought 100. I’m afraid they’ll stop making them, but I write so much, I go through about one a month. Oh, and I only get them in blue.
To add to the thread: name brand gym/casual shoes. I grew up with the not-so-hot, almost-generic shoes and was mocked mercilessly for it. I don’t particularly care which brand name, but there must be one. And ditto on the Cheerios and the Hellmans.
Ice cream for us too, preferably Swensen’s bought fresh from an actual outlet. Nothing worse than that cardboard-tasting generic supermarket ice cream.
In a bit of a twist, I love this kind of cereal and am now a huge fan of Trader Joe’s “Joe’s O’s” which I think are much better than Cheerios. If you have the opportunity, you might see if the other Whatsits agree with me. And save a ton in the bargain.
Dog food. I may eat generic/store brand, but my dogs eat the good stuff, always.
I am willing to tolerate diversity of opinion. I may not agree with you, but I respect your position.
