Most good science fiction short stories or novels could be made into low-budget films. Most Hollywood producers don’t care. Their view is that science fiction movies, by definition, are full of things that go boom or whoosh and therefore must cost lots of money. Anybody who tries to pitch them a low-budget science fiction script is tossed out of their office immediately. They’re not interested in wasting their time listening to some oddball who thinks that he knows more about what audiences want than they do.
