Today, if one googles Venus Butterfly, someone has come up with the assumption that it was oral, but no one has ever presented any evidence that it was anything other than a made-up sex act. ---

I realize this thread is a zombie, but: There’s a term of art for this in the entertainment industry, popularized by Alfred Hitchcock: [a MacGuffin.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin) Hitchcock popularized the term in the late 1930s he described the MacGuffin concept thusly: > [@Alfred Hitchock](#): > > It might be a Scottish name, taken from a story about two men on a train.
