Although I nod to **Czarcasm** , (‘Eric’), and **unclviny** , (‘Fred’), I have to go with **nevermore** and his eventual choice of, ‘Fluffy’. It is a good name for any and all pets, and possibly anything with a beating heart, if you can get away with it. ---

Fish 1: Orange. Fat. The biggest of the bunch. **Fat Nemo** Fish 2: Paler orange than fish 1. Skinny, the smallest of the lot. **Nemo** Fish 3: Orange with white lips. The second biggest. **Lord Nemonton Chesterfordshire the Fourth, of Fishpond Waters** Fish 4: Orange. Middle sized. No interesting features at all. **Little Nemo** Fish 5: Looks identical to Fish 4 except with a little patch of black on its tailfin. **Little Black Nemo** ---

Begin hijack: I just got home after taking my daughter to the pet store, where we just purchased a fish and bowl for her room. We were discussing names for the critter; I suggested “Hors d’oeuvre”, on account of our two cats (“I’ll keep my door closed, Daddy”). She didn’t care for that suggestion, and decided upon “Sushi”, instead. End hijack ---

Do they have raccoons in Oz? No matter, the herons or cormorants will get them. Though I hope not. Seriously, I had a goldfish named Spot. He was my favorite of the four I had at the time. The other three were named Murgatroyd, Mabel, and Salmon (because of his shape, which was much more streamlined than her chubby tankmates. You’re welcome to any of those monikers. I’d like to clear up some misconceptions about goldfish. When they get to know you, they will get excited to see you and come rushing across the pond to say hi. The more time you spend with them, the stronger the bond will be between them and you. If you lie down beside the pond and put your hand in the water, they will start coming to it in a pretty short amont of time. They’ll suck at your fingers and will even let them stroke their sides. Spot used to like to sit in my cupped hand just under the surface of the water. We’d commune with one another for a half hour or more. And after the first couple of weeks, I never used a net with them. I’d just scoop them up with my hand and plunk them in a bowl. I usually did it quickly but a few times I did it slowly just to see what they’d do. I guess they trusted me because it would take several seconds before they would start to panic. Goldfish are winter hardy too. They can survive under an inch or two ice with no problem at all. As long as sunlight can get to the bottom of the pond to stimulate the growth of algae and other plants, they’ll have enough food and oxygen to last them until the ice melts. I hope you take the time to get to know them. You’ll find they each have their own personalities. Mine helped me get through a very depressing time in my life. They knew how to make me smile. ---

We put in a pond at our last house and named our fish: Elvis (the biggest who also turned out to be a girl) Barry White (he got a fungus and is no longer among us) Orange Spot and Blue Spot (the Shubunkins) Tom and Dick Elvis died last year at about ten years of age. All of the original fish are gone now with the exception of either Tom or Dick (never could tell those two apart). We moved four years ago and a friend of ours moved into our old house so he’s taking care of all the descendants. I miss the little moochers. ---
