I like Biden’s slogan from the 2020 election. **Make lying wrong again**.

I still have that sign hanging in my garage.

This era transitioned from Renaissance religious dominance to a rationalist worldview, leading into the broader Enlightenment (c. 1685-1815).

> A sane Congress needs to do more than just roll back MAGA abuses, it needs to eliminate the supremacy of the executive branch that has been creeping upward for the better part of a century. Things like executive orders and declarations of emergency need to be extensively defanged by law and Congress and the courts need to once again zealously guard their prerogatives and duties and not just deligate them willy-nilly to the president…_any_ president.

This is a fundamental problem of a presidential system. Any president this side of Coolidge craves more power, and someone can probably show me that Coolidge was no exception either. And a Democratic congress is not going to emasculate a Democratic president on grounds that maybe, one day, this will make a Republican president less powerful. So I agree with you, even if I am pessimistic.

There’s one part of this that might work, and it does fit with a Rule of Law slogan. Push a constitutional amendment to restrict the presidential pardon power. With exceptions, I’m a skeptic regarding punishment, and so have previously been pro-pardon. But Trump has shown me the danger. This is the one post-Trump amendment that I think has a chance of getting enacted, because punishment is generally more popular than forgiveness.

Looking for a slogan for the Elmer\_J.Fudd, program, we already have one — No Kings. I like constitutional monarchy, but it’s not about me.

Firing them so they stop actively harming the agencies they’re in charge of is step one. Prosecuting them so they cannot run or hold office again (either because they are in jail or because they’re disqualified from those due to engaging in insurrection per the 14th amendment) is a second, separate step. I was referring to the latter step. Obviously you fire them right away.

> In terms of the thread, if someone really thinks lock 'em up is the way to go, and is serious about doing more than one or two prosecutions, the answer to the thread title is to go with denazification. I’m against it. As already noted there will be pardons, so prosecution means destroying the rule of law.

I don’t agree. People clearly broke laws, and they should be prosecuted for it. If Trump wants to blanket mass pardon people, so be it, but make him actually do so, don’t just back down on the hunch that he might do it.

But that IS another reason not to _run on_ prosecutions, which I don’t think should be a campaign issue anyways - the less attention you draw the higher the chance there aren’t sweeping pardons. If we can’t shut up about it for the whole election cycle, it will be at the front of Trump’s mind and of course he will pardon people. (Although I don’t believe he can pardon himself).

My mother, who turned 100 just before the 2020 election, insisted that I buy her a cap with that slogan on it. I was happy to oblige.

She passed away a year later. Now my daughter is the proud owner of that cap.

“DeMAGAfication” works. It’s deliberately similar to Denazification. It makes it clear exactly what you’re doing, that MAGA is a cancer that needs to be cut out.

“Restoring the American dream” is a bad idea because it’s long and awkward and just invites people to say that democrats aren’t really very interested in that anyway. People don’t believe in the American dream anymore and you’re just opening yourself up to criticism and it feels inauthentic. It’s plausible that democrats will try to restore the rule of law, it’s implausible that they will try to restore “the American dream”

Wow. Centering is what I asked for

While centering is not a new word, I think it is new as a progressive tense verb describing what a more moderate government could do to reverse what a preceding extremist government did. I see it as a new sense of the word as previously defined in dictionaries.

To check for originality, I tried this query on both ChatGPT and Gemini:

“Find an example of the use of the word centering to mean what a moderate government does to reverse actions and appointments made by a preceding extremist government.”

While both AI’s came back with responses, they did not show anyone before using centering quite as I describe.

Does my prompt capture what you mean? I hope so.

The new word sense will obviously be more welcome if you are a political centrist. From a purely political standpoint, the problem with the word centering is that many progressives will object. Would they object so much as to vote for the Greens, or not vote? Perhaps not, because centering wouldn’t define the whole Democratic Party platform, just the part describing how extremist MAGA policies and appointees will be addressed early on.

P.S. on use of AI. This may be disliked. But I am not asking AI to create. I use it as a natural language search engine.

Ah yes, when the US swings too far to the left, like, when… uh… um…

“Centering” is going to lose you a lot of enthusiasm because the “center” in this country is pretty far right wing. Centrists continuously excuse and enable MAGA.

Ironically, your idea that we need to keep the country from swinging too far to the left extreme is exactly the sort of language that centrists both parties and “centrists” use to justify the country continuously moving to the right.

If you’re worried about this country swinging too far to the left “extreme” maybe we can cross that bridge when we come within 3 or 4 light years of it.

Yeah, I gotcha, but my conservative friends, my Trumpist friends, would disagree with you.

By Centering, or Centering Normalization, I think of it like this: when that is completed, is 50% of the country happy enough and the other 50% unhappy enough? If so then Centering, or Centering Normalization, has been successful.

Yeah, this is a big issue with the term.

Like, I personally think that what we need to do is Liberalize, in the sense of “reaffirm our commitment to Liberal values”. But I’d never suggest that as the term we should use because “Liberalize” wouldn’t mean what I want it to mean in the American context; it would mean “move further Left” to almost everyone in the country. And the problem is that “respect for liberal values” is on an entirely different axis. There are old school never Trump Republicans who are further Right than many MAGA supporters yet who have respect for liberal values.
