Thanks for the ROTT memories, I had considered the “god” mode sound effects in a spot-the-line-from-a-game thread a while back. “MMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGHHHHH” and then a ball of energy hops off to take someone out 😃

I always liked the Obelisk of Nod from Command and Conquer, especially when you rushed it with infantry and it was a race between the men with guns and the big laser burning them like ants under a magnifying glass.

For a strategy perspective -

Stellar Converters
Black Hole Generators - _Master of Orion_

Oh baby - wiping out 300+ missile bases at one time with these. Yummy.

PS - Is there a Flash version of MOO anywhere?

**Doom 2**

Super fuckin’ shotgun (BOOOM!), regular shotgun, plasma gun, rocket launcher, BFG, chainsaw, chaingun. No better selection of weapons to be found.

**Turok 2** should be mentioned here, if only for the Cerebral Bore. I shall explain.

The [Cerebral Bore](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEKLa373SIw) was a weapon that was most useful against intelligent enemies, because it homed in on their powerful brainwaves. Basically, you’d aim, lock in a target, and fire. The Bore would shoot forth a small, flying drone that would home in on the target. When it connected, the drone would _drill into the target’s head, ejecting a stream of blood and grey matter_ for several seconds, after which the drone would explode, along with the creature’s head. One-shot death.

The Cerebral Bore was such an awesome weapon, intelligent creatures would actually _flee at the sight of it_.

Since I’m such a big fan of arcade games, I should mention **Time Crisis 3**. The great thing about it was that the weapons weren’t especially unusual, but for those of us who’d gotten used to single-weapon gameplay, they were a godsend. There was the machine gun, a continuous stream of rapid-fire death. There was the shotgun, which gouged massive holes out of enemies and had exceptional range and speed. Then there was…the fight ender. A.k.a. the grenade launcher. It didn’t matter how tenacious the enemy was, one or two hits from this and he was DONE attacking you.

To this day, there are few PS2 activities I find more cathartic than taking on a massive army complete with jeeps and tanks and attack boats and watching them all crumble helplessly before my unstoppable firepower\*.

**Time Crisis 4** nerfed these weapons a little but made up for it my turning the handgun into a cannon. THREE times the power of the machine gun, and the bullets also cover a wider area.

- Yes, there are cheat codes involved, what of it?

fusoya - Oh, come on. You never faced spread-out soldiers? A fast-moving soldier you couldn’t draw a bead on with the Baretta? Someone you had to make an angled shot at? Here, I’ll give an example, the second-to-last room, the one with the supercomputer. One quick burst and all four guards go down, no muss, no fuss. Not essential (okay, I guess I forgot about this one), but far from useless.

Yeah the Turok games need some love for sure.

I thought the weapons from Oni had a lot of character but nobody ever played it but me. Game didn’t have a shotgun, which I appreciated. But there was the sniper rifle that fired slugs of frozen mercury, and the bouncing cluster grenade launcher, and the swarm missile launcher that essentially did nothing but was so cool anyway…

I’d like to shout out an honorable mention to _Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines_, for the insane variety of melee weapons it provided. You could find, steal, or buy a vast array of firearms that were far superior to the close-range stuff, but it was so unbelievably funny to watch your character stealth-kill someone with a weed whacker that I always stuck with the melee stuff when possible.

In the same vein: Dead Rising. I have killed zombies with golf clubs, giant umbrellas, and bass guitars. I have sprayed them with Super Soakers. I have slammed novelty masks onto their heads so they cannot see me and then cut them off at the knees with a scythe.

Truly an improvisational combat masterpiece.

**Painkiller**. The painkiller weapon was a deadly combination of grapple hook, slice’n’dicer and thrown buzzsaw blades. Combined with ragdoll engine it offered variety of ways of dispatching enemies, most of them included flying bodies or body parts all over a map. And there were also other weapons like shotgun with secondary fire option of instant freezer, stakegun that can tack enemies to walls or ceilings and funny combination of rocket launcher and minigun.

I played the hell out of the ROTT demo (The Hunt Begins), but I could never find a copy of the full game. I just checked and there’s not even a copy on eBay.

But someday I will find it, someday.

While they’re not exactly memorable or unusual, I’ve been playing Dead Rising recently and I love how just about _everything_ is a weapon. If you can pick it up, you can bash a zed’s face in with it (or at least throw it in desperation). Most items have particular uses, and there are lots of joke items with their own little nuances, like the shower head.

Ahh, I see **Shadow Warrior** has already been mentioned, while the Nuke was excellent. There was nothing like it in a LAN game when you heard the “nuclear warhead activated” come across - Run like hell!!!.

But the game had other fantastic weapons as well, the shuriken, if you missed you go around and pick up the shuriken from the walls where they had stuck 🆒

And of course the sticky bomb 😃 That was hilarious when you hit someone and ran back waiting for it to go off 😃

And who could forget being able to pick up the head or heart of some enemies and use them as weapons. I think it was Shadowwarrior that showed you rearranging the order of your fingers into the back of an enemies skull for an alternate fire mode

And of course the hilarity of trying to drop somebody on someone while you’re Ninja-Roped onto a wall, and then seeing your Ninja Rope fail for whatever reason…

I think my most common cause of death in that game was “suicide via mis-fired Missle” or “drowning via ricochet”.

When I was first introduced to the game, it took me forever to figure out how to use the ninja rope properly. Meanwhile, my friends were scaling walls and flying across the map like they were Spider-Worms. ☹
