Another “I love the uniforms of another city’s team” vote.
Although I’m a huge San Jose Sharks fan, I just love the uniforms of the Chicago Blackhawks. They’re the most gorgeous uniforms in the league.
Here’s an image of their famous jersey.

Not that I really care very much, but I guess I’m supposed to like the Raiders over the Niners, since I grew up in the East Bay and only briefly lived in San Francisco. The Raiders always struck me as a bunch of mercenary thugs though, or maybe that’s just Al Davis. Moving to LA and back, and then cajoling Oakland to spend a fuckton of money on the Coliseum that it couldn’t really afford, pissed me off. Besides that, my stepfather was a big fan of Joe Montana and later Steve Young, and it’s hard to argue with that.
… and we’re both geologists too. Quick… what color is your hair? Is there a circular bench around the tree in your backyard? Hey everyone… I’ve found my brother!
This might be heretical to Cowboys fans but despite past rivalries with San Francisco and Pittsburgh, I really don’t mind the 49ers or Steelers either. In fact, the older I get the more I just enjoy the games for the simple pleasure of watching football, regardless of their location or division.
The eagles and redskins will however always knit socks that smell.
Brown, and I guess that I can admit that ever since Singletary became the head coach of the 49ers, I… uh… have been pulling for them, too.
(Agreed on the Eagles and Skins!)
I am a Yankees and **Giants **fan, but those two are only right as I was born in the Bronx and both teams played in the Bronx back then. Then the **Giants **were even nice enough to follow me to NJ and my father and many other relatives were all fans of both teams.
However, I also grew up a Knicks and Rangers fans and I did not mind that the Rangers had never won in 50 years. No problem, but the Dolans made be hate rooting for the teams I loved and I mostly stopped watching both sports. At least I got to enjoy that shining magical season the Rangers won in 94 before I gave up on Hockey. Screw the Dolans!
Landry was a very good defensive back for the Giants, and has thirty-something career interceptions. By all accounts, he wasn’t very fast, but had an uncanny knack for reading offenses and guessing where the quarterback was going to throw the ball.
Tom Landry was also the Giants’ defensive coordinator until 1960, when he was hired as the head coach of the expansion Dallas Cowboys.
It was during his term with the Giants that he started wearing his trademark fedora- just because it was COLD at Yankee Stadium in November and December, and he needed to keep his bald head warm.
Even after he left New York, he remained very friendly with Giants owner Wellington Mara. Even after Tom was fired by the Cowboys, he’d occasionally be seen at Giants Stadium sitting in Mara’s box.
Here’s something the long-suffering Giants fans of the Sixties and Seventies liked to remember: in 1959, the Giants’ defensive coordinator was Tom Landry and their offensive coordinator was Vince Lombardi. A year later, both were head coaches elsewhere, and the Giants went into a slump that lasted 20 years.
I often heard variations on this lament. “We could’ve had Lombardi. We could have had Landry. But noooo, we’ve got Allie F–ing Sherman!”
Classic! Thanks for the history and this morning’s first laugh!
Cheers!
Well, now I like the Giants (even though I shouldn’t) even more. I have a Hank Hill-like fondness for ol’ Tom Landry.
Still, Go Cowboys!
Born and raised in Pittsburgh and went to Pitt. It is pretty apparent where all of my allegiances lie; however, I do enjoy watching certain teams mostly for players and concepts.
NHL: I’m a big Penguins fan, but I love to watch the Blackhawks. I mainly love watching Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane–plus they’re an Original 6 franchise. I also will gladly watch any game featuring a Canadian team, because I both miss the Nordiques and Jets and also think that some of the terribly underperforming, warm-weather teams should be shipped back where people really care about them.
NFL: I went to Pitt during the Larry Fitzgerald era. I will always cheer for any team he is on.
MLB: I used to be a diehard Pirates fan but… god… the horror… I really like to watch the Brewers, purely out of jealousy. Similar city, similar market–it makes me dream that one day my team will have intelligent people running it and some day we’ll have a Jewish left fielder and a 400-lb vegetarian first baseman who’ll lead us to the playoffs.
I grew up in south-eastern Pennsylvania. All the other kids who liked (American) football were fans of either the Philadelphia Eagles or the then-BALTIMORE Colts. My dad, a Wisconsinite, rooted for the Green Bay Packers. How my brother and I ended up as Steeler fans is a Darn Good Question, even though that was the era when they won four Super Bowls…
Our sister is a Dallas Cowboys fan. We believe she chose this on purpose, just to be difficult
(And my elder son? Packers fan. Pop-pop got to him early, it seems.)
I’m a native NYer and rabid baseball fan. My father and grandfather were both die-hard Yankee fans, and so am I.
But I also love the Mets. In NY, you’re supposed to be a fan of one or the other, but I’m too much of a baseball fan to hate either team. Besides, when you’ve spent the past 18 years living more than 100 miles from the nearest MLB team, you appreciate how lucky fans in some cities are to have two franchises to choose from. I routinely went to both teams’ games and dressed accordingly.
Same with the Jets and Giants. I also root for the Bucs, but I lived in Tampa for 7 years. That also accounts for my being a big Orlando Magic fan. But I’m sure that if NY ever gets a basketball team, I’ll probably root for them, too.
What?
I was born in Texas but lived in SoCal and first learned the game of football round about 1978 when I was about 8 years old. At the time, I asked my friends, “Which NFL team is good?” Who wants to root for a loser, right? The answer was the Steelers, so I was a Steeler fan from 1978 until 1981, when Bradshaw was gone and they went downhill.
Then came the 49ers, and I was a 49er fan when they won their first SB.
Then, when I was about 13 years old, I made friends with a transplant to SoCal from Texas. Somehow, he got me all pumped up about Texas pride and the Dallas Cowboys and my Texas heritage. I was a kid and thought it was cool to have been born there, for some reason, and my family on my father’s side was from Texas, and I have been a Cowboys fan ever since. I went to their SoCal training camp and got autographs from Tom Landry and the gang.
Now, I live in NorCal, and I have much more pride in California than Texas, hence my Doper name. I am finding that as the Landry and Jimmy Johnson eras fade into history, and the Cowboys take on people like TO and Pacman and whine about losing, my faith is being tested.
I can’t see myself ever liking the Steve Young 49ers, but I am starting to like the 49ers. First, it’s my most local team. Further, they are a young and scrappy team. Now that they have Singletary, I have started rooting for them. I also like the Chargers.
I don’t know where this will lead, but as a fan since 1983, Dallas is getting pretty annoying.
I am also finding that I like the NFC and AFC West more generally and would like more Lombardi trophies out West.
Aside from the lions, the new england patriots. everyone hates them, but I as a Michigan fan I have to support Tom Brady.
I graduated from the U. of Georgia so I really shouldn’t root at all for the U. of Tennessee, regardless of the fact that I moved to Knoxville about a year ago. However, I do root for UT in all games in that they aren’t playing GA (or games in which a UT loss benefits UGA). And UT’s support of their womens programs is top-notch, and one can only respect Pat Summitt.
Having said that:
GO DAWGS! SIC EM! WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
