I’m not the one complaining about Hell Houses, am I **norinew**? All I was saying is that if **Avalonian** is gonna complain about them, he should go and experience it firsthand so he’ll have more of a basis for his objections. (It’s sort of like how people are screaming about Mel Gibson’s “Passion” movie without having seen it.) If you don’t fully understand what you’re against, how can you have anything more than a half-baked opinion? **Avalonian** seems to understand my reasoning. Now this doesn’t work with everything, of course. I’m opposed to, say, abortion, but I don’t think I need to go out and have one done so I can know what I’m talking about. Same with drugs, drunk driving, etc. But with things like contoversial books/movies, etc., I like to watch/read first before I start protesting. I haven’t gone yet because it is too darn hard to get in, and I don’t have the time to wait around the church till midnight or so before they can squeeze me in (only a certain # of people go through all at once, and they encourage having an appointment). I’m in school full time and I just can’t stay up all hours like I used to. ---

**SnoopyFan** , no, you’re not the one complaining about them. But if you can’t understand complaining about it until you’ve seen it, how can you justify defending it before you’ve seen it? I mean, you’re saying “the one at my church isn’t like that”, when you haven’t been through it. Hey **Midnight Rodeo** #1 tell me your name doesn’t derive from the dance place in Tulsa, pls?? #2 I’ve been to the GUTS church one, too. It was incredibly deceptive, but what was hilarious was our church (presby) brought a youth group out there to show how temperate our church was…scared me straight. Also, I heard recently in Tulsa on business that many churches are against trick or treating and Halloween. I meant I’ve heard a bit about this before, but up there it’s a freakin issue. The objection has to do with the satanic and pagan origins. What’s fun is to ask the folks who are against it if they have a Christmas tree or paint eggs on Easter…hee most of those folks don’t realize the origins of those customs! ---

I’d totally forgotten about the Midnight Rodeo here in Tulsa. I’ve had several people think I said, “Midnight Rodeo,” when I give them my email address and I never understood why. Now I do. 🙂 As for the anti-Halloween movement being more pronounced in Tulsa than elsewhere, I can’t really say. I don’t go to church anymore and I don’t associate much with people who are that whacko. But the church I grew up attending, although Southern Baptist, was never all that fundie anyway, so I doubt that I’d hear much of the Halloween-is-evil crap even if I were still attending. But I imagine there are more churches in Tulsa than in, say, San Francisco or New York City, having "[truth-or-treat]([http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&postid=25478](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&postid=25478) 54#post2547854)" events. And you hit the nail on the head about Halloween being no more pagan than a Christmas tree or a colored Easter egg. Also, around the same time, Salon had an [articl e]([http://salon.com/books/feature/2002/10/28/halloween/index.html](http://salon.com/books/feature/2002/10/28/halloween/index.html)) about the history of Halloween in which it explained that Halloween is actually _less_ pagan than Christmas trees and colored eggs because it really has nothing at all to do with Samhain as has often been believed. It’s a purely American invention, like Thanksgiving or Mother’s Day. I’d also like to echo something **Avalonian** said earlier. The trick (no pun intended) to being saved is accepting Christ’s gift of salvation, which was given in pure love. If people at these “hell houses” are being converted/saved not out of love for Christ and gratitude for his gift of salvation, but out of fear because they don’t want to go to hell, I have to wonder, theologically speaking, how valid those conversions are. ---
