Thanks for the offers people… wish I could take you up on them but as I said, I’d already made plans. Going back to Calgary and to Mom’s. I would’ve been out at the end of this month but my family is going to move me and this isn’t the best time so we’re waiting another month. My plans were made before this stupid stuff started happening.
Oh btw we do have hot water today, minimal at least. They replaced the hot water tank and are waiting for parts for another one. We got a note telling us what was going on around 9 last night (took them awhile… I do know the water was out around 1am. Glad it didn’t take them 5 days like they said it might
I’m glad you have plans to get out of there. It sounds like a less-than-ideal place to live, whether you look at the night-owl roomies, or the hinky plumbing/mechanical/maintenance stuff.
I hope for your sake that moving to your mother’s is as cozy and safe a landing for the next few months as it might sound on the surface. Just a guess, you could use some peace.
Juniper200, I must admit, Ginger is right, we have known each other for eons. I even have a picture of us next to some big tusky mammal that I haven’t seen alive in forever.
My dream home, FWIW, has roughly a million spare bedrooms, each with private ensuite, so that I can have as many house guests as I want, and they can stay as long as they want. It would be the ultimate house party. Dopers might even be invited.
The funny thing about those night-owl roomies… I usually stay up later than they do. One keeps insisting that I have to be in bed early and up early or it’s bad for the baby and then the nights when I do manage to sleep at a decent hour are the nights that they have a party… and sometimes they even wake me up to invite me to come out and socialize. If I’m asleep early it’s cuz I’m tired, I don’t want to socialize then.
It will be better. Mom and I have always gotten along real well and I think things will be a little easier with my own Mom around to help, otherwise I’m pretty much on my own up here because the family up here is all over the place and too busy to be as much a help. Even if I’m just flipping out cuz caterpie has the sniffles for the first time… Plus I know of a support group within 3 blocks of Mom’s house whereas the nearest one up here is a decent jaunt away.
One legal option might be to put your rent in an escrow account and not pay a dime until the place is livable, but you’d have to check your local laws to confirm you can to it in your area.
My first thought was that it was an owner. This has all the earmarks of trying to drive the tenants out. It could also be the work of someone trying to buy the land. There’s no logical reason to believe this is someone with no financial interest in the real estate. Just vandals? I don’t believe that.
Sadly, for collectors like myself, renter’s insurance on the order of $100,000 worth of coverage demands that you can prove possession of some $200,000 worth of assessed belongings. Just getting all of my various collections appraised would cost a few thousand dollars.
This is why I’ve had to make sure the dryer’s lint trap is always emptied (the other tenants will let it get up to 1" thick), stop the next door neighbors from hanging clothes out to dry on the electrical wires going out to the garage and wonderful ideas like that.
