I’m thinking of that episode of Futurama where Mom takes over all the robots’ brains so they will revolt against the humans. The ringleader is a talking birthday card that keeps spouting revolutionary jargon in a cute little voice. In my head asahi sounds like that talking card. ---

This is as good a time as any to talk about my user name. During the French Revolution the tricoteuses were women who sat at the foot of the guillotine to watch the executions and knitted to pass the time in between. As long as asahi gives us enough warning before he starts his revolution I’m sure I can organize something with the others in my knitting group. ---

Did you sleep through history class in high school? Good god, this country has been through far, far worse. Two world wars. A great depression. A fucking civil war. The deadliest terrorist attack in human history. And through it all, we survived. You have no idea how many times people have predicted the kind of crap you are now. “Ooooh, things are worse than EVAR!!! The republic is going to fall!!! It’s the end times!!!” Yeah, I know, I know. It’s different this time. Just like it was for our parents, and our grandparents, and our great-grandparents, and so on. Color me skeptical. ---

I fully agree with you, but you missed one of my benchmarks: We used to have right-wing paramilitary death squads performing extra-judicial executions in this country. We called them the Ku Klux Klan and they were especially active in the 1920s. They were _broken_ in the 1960s Civil Rights Era, when the Federal government effectively took over prosecution from the complicit state and local governments, but the last big resurgence was in the 1920s, a period we usually associate with peace and prosperity in this country. So as bad as the alt-right is, a few murders and a bunch of suburbanites waving Tiki torches around doesn’t compare to a well-known “secret” society that was lynching people and bragging about it. ---

You don’t have to look at yourselves in the mirror because history reflects the hypocrisy for you. Because I know you don’t know much about African-American history or how cruel white folks are to people of color, but you will be reminded today that the poetry of Phyllis Wheatley was assumed to be fraudulent because white folks didn’t believe a person of color to have the intelligence and creativity to write with beauty. You will be reminded today that Frederick Douglass was assumed to be fraudulent because Douglass “was an unlearned, and rather an ordinary negro, and am confident he was not capable of writing the Narrative [of Frederick Douglass]”. You will be reminded that Barack Obama was assumed to be fraudulent for . . . _everything_ . . . and white folks demanded to see\* everything\* from transcripts to birth certificates. You will also be reminded of the lives of Till, the Scottsboro Boys, Johnson who, despite protesting their innocence, were deemed as liars and executed/lynched by white people. You see, white people live in an different universe, in a different reality, where racism is antagonism; where fact and truth are replaced by conspiracy theories and rumor. White supremacy is real just ask Steve King who white folks elected to Congress - a white supremacist representing 700,000 people -[meanwhile, white folks are obsessing over Ocasio-Cortez](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/11/tim-scott-republicans-can-no-longer-be-silent-bigotry/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1087783e7a8f). Even now, you have very credible reports that President Trump - the president white people overwhelmingly chose in 2016 - is potentially be (maybe is now) a Russian agent to destabilize the United States. White folks puzzle piece response? To accuse _me_ of working as an agent of the Russian Federation :smack: to destabilize the United States. The ignorance is deafening. Not everyone is a sock, crowdsharing their account, or working for the Internet Research Agency. It’s paranoia and pathetic, and your inability to exhibit basic trust or give others benefit of the doubt doesn’t portend well for the country. ---
