The color seems wrong for it to be burnt, black rather than brown. Looks like it might’ve gotten twisted up as it was on its way to being packaged, and perhaps it hit a point on the conveyor belt that was lubricated with petroleum jelly. Many food processing machines are, since pj is edible. Old man Cheeseborough, he of the original Cheeseborough Pond company, ate a spoonful of it every day and lived into his 90’s. Slipped right out of his casket at the cemetery though. The funeral director was mortified. 😉 ---

So I could, like, put petroleum jelly in my hot cereal, or spread it on toast? I’ve never tried it. Is it anything like [Marmite](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=534691)? :eek: ---
