What things that make you a little different have you been doing forever?

Back in 6th Form, I decided to teach myself to be ambidextrous.

It’s amazing how much of a difference it made! Even now, I’m still largely right-hand dominant, but being able to stir a stir-fry whilst fishing around in the fridge has it’s benefits…

I can also reasonably accurately wield two handguns, John Woo style- a totally useless skill, but very cool nonetheless.

I never, ever wear shorts. No matter how hot it is (and it gets bloody hot here!), I always wear long pants or jeans.

Even more ironically, I hate the heat, yet I live in a subtropical region with no winter…

I like my clothes to have lots and lots of pockets in them, and I prefer to buy longsleeve shirts- so I can roll the sleeves up. :smack:

I love hats! My fiancee is nearly driven to distraction by my assortment of headgear, and has nearly died of embarrassment when I’ve worn some of them in public.

Some of the more interesting hats I’ve worn in public include:

  • An Akubra stockman’s hat (I wear this all the time- it’s my favourite hat!)
  • A Russian Ushanka fur hat, complete with Soviet Army badge. (I don’t get to wear it very much anymore since there’s no winter here, but I used to wear it all the time in NZ.)
  • A Zulu War style Pith Helmet (Khaki- I wear it hunting sometimes)
  • An Arab Shemagh (Surprisingly good for hot days out hunting in the bush, but I don’t wear it anymore because- despite the fact I’m obviously a white guy- anyone who wears one is obviously OMG A TERRORIST!!!, moreso if they’re carrying a firearm.)
  • A Sombrero (Because I could! I went to the bottleshop and got some Tequila whilst wearing it, too… )

Actually, I could fill a small novel with my quirks, now I think about it…

I have to have the bills in my wallet all facing the same way, in order from smallest to largest.

I eat M&M’s by color - I’ll eat all the red ones first, then the green ones, etc.

I always pay with exact change if possible.

I eat food by section. I eat all of one thing first, then move on to the next, then the next, and I always leave just a little bit of whatever it is I’m eating - a few fries, one or two bites of a cheeseburger, like that.

Missy, I’m the same about bills in my wallet.

I hand-squeegee my body after a shower before toweling too. You mean everybody doesn’t do it? I use my hands to squeeze water out of my long hair too. I bend forward and gently squeeze out hair from the roots to the ends. Then I flip my head up and back, and more water comes out. I repeat that a few times, then I wrap a towel around it, and then my hair is able to air-dry. I never use a blow dryer.

The reason I prefer either long garments or nudity is I like long uninterrupted lines, aesthetically. Short sleeves or short pants break up the lines in an unappealing way. I love the sweep of long flowing garments: Martha Graham was the master of this.

I’ve been highlighting my hair blonde since I was 13 years old, almost half my life. I moved to a new town and changed schools that summer, so until a few months ago, no one I went to high school or college with had ever seen my real hair color. Including my husband. In late December, I dyed it brown to see what I really look like. The experiment has not been a success; I’m going back to fake blonde in a couple of weeks. It might take me a while to reach the levels of blondeness I’d achieved previously (years of highlighting gives a more all-over effect), but hey, it’s worth it.

Also, I don’t like covering my arms unless it’s really cold. I wear plenty of long-sleeved shirts, but I roll up the sleeves whenever I’m indoors. When 3/4 sleeves got really widespread, I was in heaven. I’m wearing some right now, as a matter of fact. I’m the same way about my neck–the more space I can give my neck, the better I feel. This has led to some very low-cut tops in my wardrobe, which I love to wear but have to restrict to “appropriate times.”

Oh, and I’m another silver-wearing, non-shoelace-untying, printing-with-a-weird-pen-grip freak, too.
