What tires should I buy for my car?

I belive a big part of the Firestone debacle was that ford recmmended tire pressure towards the low end of the safe range in order to improve the ride of their SUVs. If people neglected to check their tire pressure regularly it could easily fall to an unsafe level. New cars will soon require tire pressure monitor systems partly due to this.

The Bridgestone RE950s are an excellent performance all season tire (they are what I have on my car), but according to consumer reports their snow traction is not as good as other tires they tested (I have snow tires). Also these are probaly not the kind of tire you would put on a Hyundai Elantra.

When I managed a regional office for a national company, I was forced by corporate buying decisions to use Firestone and Goodyear. My experience with both brands on everything from Chevy Celebrity size vehicles through a Ford L9000 tractor was that they are crap. Both of them. My opinion is matched by the former manager of fleet administration for a major East coast electric and gas utility.

Good experiences with tires include: Michelin, Pirelli, Metzeler, Vredestein, Continental, BF Goodrich, General, Laramie, and Cooper.

Thus far, Cooper gives me the best mileage for my buck.

And the smoothest ride for your buck as well.
