Just wanted to mention that the light rail project is open, and it’s free! It only goes two places, from Union Station to River Market, but it will be a very useful tool for Con attendees. And the Orange Line Max bus is now running until 2 AM on Friday and Saturday, so it is actually possible to go out of an evening and see a show and get home.
But the other reason I’m bumping this is to complain about the Con organization.
More than a year ago, I volunteered my services as a videographer. I can do a multi-cam video shoot, and offered to do so for talks and panel discussions in exchange for passes for my wife and myself.
The only result was I got added to an e-mail list and got one request for someone to dub old tapes. That’s it!
I’m located in Kansas City, am offering thousands of dollars in labor for a pittance in trade, and got no response. And there is no e-mail address to contact the Con committee to bring this to their attention.
Yeah, I sent in a notice that I would like to volunteer for the Con a while back, got a notice a few months later thanking me and they would get back to me, then nothing. That’s o.k.-I’ve more than put in my time conwise and this is my first WorldCon, so I’m just going to enjoy myself. I couldn’t get a room at any of the official con hotels, but I’ve got a nice room at the Comfort Inn a few blocks away, and they serve a free breakfast. I’ll be hitting the Kansas City airport around 8:30 am Wednesday morning, go register at the Con, drop off my bags at the hotel, then go back to the Con.
One of the problems with the rotating locations and constantly changing ConComs. They miss opportunities like this that would get caught by more experienced people who work together every year.
Glad to see this thread, I’m thinking of staying a day or so after the con to look around the city. Won’t have time during, working the Dealer’s Room so will probably see very little during the day. Especially since I will inevitably find 3 panels I really want to see and they will all be at the same time as a Kaffeeklatsch I really want to go to.
I would recommend getting the Grenadine Event Guide. Android or iOS, really handy if they keep it updated during the con.
I’ve been to two WorldCons, both in Chicago. The first one, I was demoing computer graphics and got a free registration for my wife and myself, the second one we were both attending. Since then, I’ve put together a multi-cam system - and frankly most of the Con video I’ve seen sucked balls, so I thought I could remedy that. I did find an e-mail address for the “Local Liaison” and wrote that person, so maybe I’ll hear from that person.
