hey if any body wants to go to brothers or two guys on hillsbore street your out of luck because if you didn’t hear they both closed this past saturday those two places were nc state eating astablishments now how sad is that after three decades of bussiness.
I was just downtown, and I went by a couple of places that I forgot to mention–they’re kind of oddball places (which means they’re cheap and have good food). Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe on Franklin Street is one of those places where you can get breakfast anytime–if you’re looking for healthy food, it’s not the place to go. I was walking by this morning, and I heard some guy say “That’s not the Waffle House.” Somebody told him it was a Waffle House. Dude, the Waffle Shoppe is way better than the Waffle House! :wally
The Carolina Coffee Shop is another Chapel Hill institution, but it’s not as cheap, and I don’t think it’s as interesting. But the food is good. And then there’s Merritt’s Store (and grill) on 15/501 just south of Chapel Hill before th 54 intersection. I haven’t eaten there yet, but I’ve heard they have the best BLTs around.
Is Squeaky still selling hot dogs in Carrboro? He probably quit for the winter, but I never drive through that part of town, so I don’t know. I used to eat Squeaky dogs a lot when I worked downtown.
Does anyone else remember the Lizard and Snake? Really good food, cheap, great atmosphere (although I took some friends there and they thought it was a dive. I found it was closing on the last day, so I went there for one last lunch. I miss the Lizard and Snake.
There was one quite awhile ago - just before I registered here, and one small one since then. I do remember an attempt to get one together one other time, but that fell through. I think part of the problem is that we are all so spread out - Raleigh is about 40 miles from where I live, so those of us in the Hillsborough/Chapel Hill area have a bit of a hike to go out that way, and there’s also a few members in Greensboro who would have an even longer drive if they wanted to come. I’ve suggested having one in Durham sometime - meet in the middle, as it were - but that’s never happened AFAIK.
Durham sounds good (but Durham, Greensboro, and Raleigh are all close enough for me). And if everyone can’t make it, we can have a mini-Dopefest (but bigger is better!). Hillsborough would be okay, too–there aren’t as many options for places to meet, but it’s kind of in the middle. Is anyone interested in having the party at their place, or should we meet somewhere?
I started a new thread over here to make plans for the Triangle Dopefest. If you’re in the mood for a party, come on over!
