What to do, see in Atlanta?

[QUOTE=Spoke]

Atlanta also has lots of great breakfast places: The Silver Skillet, West Egg Cafe, Ria’s Bluebird Cafe, The Flying Biscuit, Java Jive, Thumbs Up Cafe, Sun In My Belly, The Original Pancake House, Radial (and probably a bunch more I am missing).

The “Pig & Grits” at West Egg is one of my favorite meals in Atlanta- roasted pork, grits, pickled okra, molasses- great blend of tastes.

I like Flying Biscuit but never understood the rage or why people would wait in line for an hour for turkey bacon and an omelette. Now they have more locations so I’m guessing the wait time is less.

Depends on the time/place! A friend and I went somewhere around 9-10am on a Saturday at the midtown location, and we still had to wait outside for a while (10-15 mins or so). It was cold outside. He had gone there another day with other friends, and they didn’t seem to have had trouble getting a table, but they also went later in the afternoon.

Well, we’ll miss you.

Regarding The Flying Biscuit, I actually think their biscuits are pretty ordinary. On the other hand, their grits are freakin’ amazing.

Another interesting breakfast/brunch choice is Front Page News in Little 5 Points, which features a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar with a ridiculous range of ingredient options. If the crowds are too much at the other places (and brunch crowds can get pretty big here on weekends), you might give this place a try. (Oh, wait, it’s on Moreland Avenue. That’s gonna freak out ducati!)

I love that so many of the places recommended here are in walking distance.

Interestingly, nobody is recommending anything in Buckhead.

I always stay in Midtown or Decatur, does Buckhead has a bad reputation regarding food?

A couple of things not mentioned.

There’s an Atlanta Segway tour, we did the night time version that takes you on a ‘haunted tour’ of the city. Starts at Centennial Olympic Park and takes a nice tour of the city, will bring you by some places that you may want to return and check out (like the Shakespeare Tavern).

Also there is an Urban Adventure Quest - http://www.urbanadventurequest.com/city/default.aspx?cid=68028ed0-5586-4af4-8d80-58a95815f976 that we did last year. You play on your phone, again it starts at Centennial Park, and does a nice overview of the touristy areas. Plus, without giving away too much, you’ll have your chance to eat at Six Feet Under if you are so inclined.

No, not at all. Buckhead is Atlanta’s wealthiest neighborhood, and it used to be that if you started a thread like this, most of the food recommendations would be for places in Buckhead. Not any more, I guess. Something of a sea change. I’m sure there are still plenty of good dining spots and things to do in Buckhead. I just don’t know them. There are so many good options in Midtown and other intown neighborhoods that I rarely find myself in Buckhead any more.

(ETA: Well, Houston’s and the Buckhead Diner are in Buckhead, so it has been mentioned, I guess.)

I’ll give a second plug for the Clermont Lounge.

It’s unique, it is, and it may disappear soon.

Whatchoo talkin about? I’m always freaking out!

Now I’m taking my boy to get the best BBQ in ATL.

Old Hickory House, FTW!

PLEASE GOD let that cesspool sink back into the Earth that vomited forth it and the AMERICAN HORROR STORY 3 building it basements to begin with!

Sorry if I seem a bit emotional… it’s the only place I’ve ever had a 70 year old stripper’s hoo-hah inches from my [canned] beer. No, seriously, no exaggeration. 70 year old stripper. Full Monty (what’s left of it).
And a $10 cover charge.
Plus another couple for the stripper to go get her meds or overdose or something so long as it wasn’t near me.
I’d say more about it but you can’t understand what it was like BECAUSE YOU WEREN’T THERE, MAN, YOU WEREN’T THERE!!!

On a tagalong note, I’m going to a play in Little Five this weekend. Does anybody know if it’s safe to park there on a weekend night? For that matter, is it possible to find parking on a weekend night? (I know there’s no such thing as free parkign in Midtown, but I was wondering if it ever reaches capacity.)

I’ve tried unsuccessfully to repress the memory of my one visit to the basement on amateur-gay-strip-club night.

Unclean. Unclean.

Andy Richter gives a tour of the downtown touristy bits.
