What to do when someone's tailgating you

Only making the observation because in a mandatory defensive driver refresher the answers were, in order:

  1. Slow down and allow them to pass,

and if they still will not,

  1. Pull off the road and watch them pass you by, then get back on the road.

I usually let them go around and buy the tickets for me. If they’re just fucking w/ me I make sure my sawed-off shotgun is w/in reach. (Yep I’m from Texas)

Next: A glass of ice out the window always puts them on the brake and will melt!

Fuck’em… 3" 12g. magnum w/ double barrels

I have actually experienced this the most when I’m driving in the US. I am from Toronto and the way we do it here is get out of the passing lane and let the guy speeding, pass you …
You are not the police just be courteous and get over.
I agree sometimes there is no way to get over but what I have found on a regular basis is that people in the US always drive 5-10 miles over the speed limit in the passing lane when there is no-one in the number 2 lane.
And if you want to speed don’t ever be the lead car let the speeder drive in front of you since most radar just gets the lead car. I have also noticed driving in the US that the speeders pass on the left then keep pulling to the right after they pass a car as if they won’t get caught by radar, what’s that about?
They keep passing and going back and forth to the passing lane.
Best rule is get away from tailgaters and any dangerous drivers, stay well away from them any way you can.
If you see them pulled over up ahead by a tropper make sure you stop and tell the cop what he was doing so maybe we can get these idiots off the road. He sure won’t cut the guy a break if you stop and tell him how recklessly he was driving.

As a matter of fact I forgot to mention that in Toronto or Ontario, CANADA for that matter the police here (Ontario Provincial Police) same as state troppers, had a campaign recently to charge people with driving slow in the passing lane. We don’t have a lot of that here but as I said earlier it seems to be quite rampant in the US with people driving slow in the passing lane, and not really sure why people do it.

Sounds like we’ve pretty much covered all the bases, but I just wanted to add that as the car being tailgated, I can’t control how much room is left between me and the car behind, but I can control the speed. So I make the speed appropriate to the space. If they leave only enough room to be safe at 10 mph below the speed limit then that’s how fast I drive. It works out to the same thing in the end, but that seems safer than driving on at high speed with the two cars so close together.

'course YMMV

Lots of bad advice here, and lots of illegal suggestions, so I’ll close this thread. If you want to know what to do, check your state’s driver’s manual. Most states have theirs online, or you can pick up a copy at the DMV. Slowing down abruptly when being followed closely, especially without benefit of brake lights, is a very bad idea, and possibly illegal. Throwing solid objects or liquids out of the window is a very bad idea, and probably illegal.

I’ll be sure to try that today…
