There have certainly been even less qualified justices in the past - hell, more than half the SC justices never even had law degrees. A number of them just learned lawyerin’ from reading a book. And of course even being a lawyer( let alone a judge )is not technically a requirement for the job. ---

Some presidential administrations ask prior presidents to do diplomatic or other work on behalf of the US government. To a certain extent, this is what SNL parodied in [The X-Presidents digital shorts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X-Presidents). However, the current administration seems unwilling to do anything that might make anyone else look good, so that’s not happening. ---
