Or pick up anything by John Irving (with the possible exception of Setting Free the Bears, which was, well, a bear to plow through, and the only of his works I never reread. Try The Water-Method Man maybe.

I very much liked The World According To Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire. I read them a long time ago, but really liked the writing style and characters. I may have to read some of his other stuff.

I think Garp and Hotel might both appeal to the OP.
