[torrentscan.com](http://torrentscan.com) is good way to search a bunch of them easily. Isohunt and Mininova usually seem to be the best for me. ---

Torrentfinder searches multiple sites nicely and available as a google toolbar button. ---

Basically, with a torrent you split your file in question into many pieces. If I want your file, I can download an identifying file for it (which tells my torrent-downloader what i’m actually after) and so get those seperate bits of that file. But say **Annie** also wants the file. She can download bits from you, but she can also download the bits i’ve already got from you, too. So instead of us both having to get it from you, we share out the uploading/downloading. And it’s faster, since **Annie** doesn’t need to wait until i’ve completely got the file before it’s avaliable from me for her. And if your or my computers go down, there’s still one of us for **Annie** to download from. And she can be downloaded from in turn. And if there’s, say, 1 of us who has part 1, and all of us have part 2, your tracker will prioritise downloading part 1 because it’s rarer, giving you a better chance of getting the whole thing. The torrent itself is the identifying file, IIRC. ---
