# What Trivial Knowledge Have You Learned Lately?

On a recent trip to Shanghai, I learned that the two Chinese characters ( 手紙 ) used in the Japanese word for “letter” (document) also mean “toilet paper” in Chinese.

手 (te) means “hand”  
紙 (kami) means “paper”

You know ligers and tigons, the animals you get when you cross a lion with a tiger? Turns out that pretty much all the big cats can be successfully crossed with each other (male lion/female jaguar = liguar, male leopard/female lion = leopon, etc.). Some of these hybrids are also interfertile, so a leopon/liguar cross is called a “leoligulor.” Whoever established this naming system needs to be slapped, hard.

It must be fun working at unregulated zoos where you can just throw different species in with each other and see if they can interbreed.
