What type of annoying bird is this ?

::listens to file:: Wow, I always assumed that the variety of noises was coming from a bunch of different types of birds, not one kind of bird trying to get me out of bed.

I’m in SF Bay Area also and this bird bugs me. It’s shrill, piercing tone hurts my ears. Last year one of them was attacking a neighbor’s car so much they tried to shoot the bird. It’s plain brown, medium sized.

At my college we had geese…thousands of geese, enough that the county considered putting poison on the grass to drive them away. Those were some nasty, loud, mean, disgusting birds.

At my house one of the neighbors had some sort of huge green exotic bird, I never did figure out what it was but when they were outside, they’d bring it out with them. It was on the other side of a privacy fence, so we couldn’t see it. If I was sitting outside with friends who weren’t aware of said bird, they would actually duck when it squawked it was so effin loud and usually say “WTF was that?” My normal response was to casually tell them it was just the neighbors pterodactyl. This thing sounded like it was going to come over and carry the lawn furniture away.

Hummingbird. I recognized it’s chirp right away. There was one that loved to torture my dog when I was a kid. It would hover above him, chirp, then fly away as my poor dog went into a frenzy. After calming down, the little bugger flew right over my dog again and repeated the performance. This would go on for a while until the hummingbird got bored (or hungry).

I’m with Twoflower - it’s probably a California Towhee. They’re very common in the suburban Bay Area ( one pair breeds in my backyard in Berkeley ) and their main call is a repetitious metallic chirp. Very territorial birds - an acquaintance I once had had a pair of rusty, squeaky hand-shears she used for gardening and without fail it would lure in her local Towhee looking for a rival to pummel.
