I won’t claim they are the quintessential southern rock band, but they fall within the spectrum. My point in bringing them up was that the genre was not homogeneously white. If there’s any better examples, I’d love to hear them. I think the Charlie Daniels Band had some black members in it at some point, didn’t it?
The only black guy who rides that I know listens to the same stuff as the white guys–classic rock, Southern rock (including the Allmans, I think; definitely Skynyrd), and heavy metal. And he also likes party-oriented rap and R&B.
