** What was Planet of the Apes about?**

As I remember it, and lord knows I am probably wrong… the original ending is Caesar’s inflamatory “Let’s murder those who would murder us” speech with the apes killing the governor at the end…this is the ending that caused the near riot in Watts. They tacked on the new speech (which is only done in extreme close ups of Roddy McDowell because they were done shooting the film). So technically the original ending is in the movie with the exception of the non-murder of the governor. The peaceful speech is a tack on to make the endign not so “death to humanity”
Don’t expect Planet of the Apes to make any logical sense. It’s scientifically ludicrous, and pretty heavy-handed satire, to boot… and yet I love it. Probably because of the strong impression it made on my seven-year-old self when it came out.
