What was so wonderful about Jerry Orbach?

The only true badguy role I can remember him playing was that of the rat mobster in film FX. Didn’t know who he was when I first saw it so I had no problem accepting as your basic slimy goom-bah.

Later, after watching him on L&O for so long, seeing FX again he seemed so out of place to me…

In Prince of The City he played, like, the anti-Briscoe. A very raw and unlikeable cop. The guy had serious chops as a dramatic heavy long before L&O.
