Mine was also a movie. Depending on what counts as a “date” (mom taking you both somewhere versus being properly picked up by your suitor), it can range from something I forget as an early tween to, I think, _Top Secret_ with Val Kilmer when I was fifteen. ---

My first proper date (that wasn’t just school silliness) was also to see a film: Return of the Living Dead. Perfect date material what with the comedy and having to protect her from the zombies 🙂 ---

I came of age in a time and place where “go on a date” was a phrase that mostly stayed inside of quotation marks. Some other generation’s idea of how stuff went down. I mean, yeah, we went out together, making arrangements to spend time together one-on-one, and sometimes even planned events in advance, but a lot of stuff was either entirely spontaneous or was a variation on “hanging out with your friend”. School is out, you’ve eaten dinner, … “Hey, wanna hang out?” I say this as a person who spent a goodly chunk of those years on the outside looking in (seeing other kids behave this way) but I had a regular couplescent relationship during my senior year. Everyone went steady, really really quickly. (I don’t think it’s a good thing, just recounting that we did so). It was therefore vanishingly rare that someone-not-your-girlfriend would ask you, or be asked by you, to “go out with me”. Most people seemed to establish that “we’re going to be a couple” with someone else in the process of an informal unplanned meeting, as spontaneous as possible (spontaneous and informal was definitely IN). Then you were a couple and you did not “go on a date” for the most part, you just hung out together. ---

My first real date was also to the movies. I wanted to see Billy Madison, she wanted to see Boys on the Side. We decided we’d see both, with Boys on the Side being first. We went to get lunch in between movies, where she (mercifully, because we were quickly coming to the realization that we had almost nothing in common and little to talk about) ran into some friends who talked her into seeing Legends of the Fall instead. I declined the invitation to see that one and went home. We never did have a second date, but remained friends for a while before life led us in different directions. ---

It was a group date, to see a fairly horrible movie ([Class of 1984](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083739/?ref_=nv_sr_1)). Two couples, who were friends of mine, were going to see it, and the two girls in the couples had a friend who wanted to come along. They invited me to come with them, so that said friend would have a date, as well. The fact that that was during my senior year of high school tells you a bit about my social life in high school. 😉 I went on one additional date with that girl, a couple of weeks later (to our Homecoming dance). I’d thought it went well, but, a few days later, she had a mutual friend inform me that she didn’t want to see me again. So, that stung a bit. ---

For my 15th birthday, went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show (my first time) with a wonderful girl a year younger than me (also her first time). Over 30 years later, she lives on the other side of the country but we see each other from time to time and we immediately reconnect as best friends when we get together. Years later she told me that when I asked her out it was the first time a guy had actually asked her out on a date. She went home all excited and told her mom about it. Sweet memory 😃 ---

I forget exactly how old I was (maybe 14?) or what her name was, or even what we did. But AFTERwards, we went to dinner with my parents at Olive Garden. My dad was sitting across from her and he bit into one of the peppers from the salad and pepper juiced squirted her directly in the eye. It was horrible and hilarious. She moved to Chicago not too long after that so I never saw her again. ---

Mine was super-romantic. I’d decided at 16 to drop out of school and bike across the country in February to join Earth First!, and I told a girl at my school. She invited me over to the house where she was babysitting that night, and we kissed until she told me she was in love with this guy she knew from summer school, but then we kissed some more and I didn’t drop out of school because after all kissing is better than riding 2500 miles on a ten-speed in February, even a sixteen-year-old can figure that out. ---

I don’t think it was the first date, but an extremely characteristic date from around that time was going to see “The Relic” (a sci-fi/horror thingy with Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore, oh boy!) The movie was a dud, the date didn’t lead anywhere and in retrospect I was embarrassed by my behavior (which wasn’t creepy, just clueless) ---

I hadn’t thought about this in years. It was senior year of High School. She went to a different High School but we somehow had friends in common and I got her phone number and called her to talk. I ended up asking her out. I lived in LA proper and she lived in Encino or something. I drove to her parent’s place and picked her up. The whole thing was so fucking awkward mostly on my side. I am cringing to think about it. I thought that she was a little snobby at the time but in retrospect she was actually kind. We went to a deli and saw a movie called Shoot the Moon. I’m really surprised that I remembered that but I looked it up and the plot matches. I never called her after the date which I am certain was fine with her. She did give me my first kiss which was a quick peck on the lips. I just remembered that her name was Tammy. My good friend dated her briefly a few months later and I had no issues with it at all.
