Super Mario was my first game as well. It was also the only game we had for about a year, so I got really good at it. My proudest childhood memory was telling my friends that I could beat it in under 5 minutes. They didn’t believe me, doubtful words were exchanged, in the end most of the kids on my block gathered in my living room to time me. With the clock ticking, the pressure of the crowd weigning on my mind, I still managed to make good on my bragging, and rescue the princess in under 5.
Most people have fond memories of the big tee-ball games they won as kids with the final inning homerun, or the peewee football touchdown they scored in overtime. Me, I got Mario in under 5.
Whoa…how is that even possible? There were at least 9 worlds, weren’t there? I don’t understand how you can get through a world a minute, when each world has something like 4 levels.
You know how you could tell who got a Pong game for Christmas? The TV in the basement had a burnout stripe across the front.
My Dad has been a gamer for every of the 36 years I’ve known him. When Pong came out, we had it…when Coleco came out, we had it. The biggest game…the one that’ll stay on my mind forever is ‘The Legend of Zelda’. Pure perfection. Myself, my brother and my father all have various game systems now, but in 2003 we all bought the GameCube Zelda set. In my mind, if it wasn’t the father of gaming, it was at least a relative. Nothing other than System Shock 2 has come close…IMHO…
We bought a copy of Space Invaders with our 2600. So that and Combat were our first games.
The plug in 2600 emulator has Adventure, which I loved also. I’ve requested it for Christmas. I certainly hope the Easter Egg is in that version also - I think Adventure is one of the first games with one.
The first easter egg, actually.
Somebody get this freakin’ duck away from me!
Warps baby. Warps.
I never really got into video games as a kid or teen, so I started much later.
My first was Beavis and Butthead for Sega Genesis. Second one was Jungle Strike.
I actually still have the games, but the console has long since passed. I have no idea why I’m hanging on to those games.
Ah…forgot about the warps.
NO wait! My daughter just pointed out my error! MY first game was Jeopardy! for SG. The other games belong to her. Sorry Laura.
Mine was too!
Acquiring Super Mario Bros was the beginning of a long and storied Nintendo playing career. I once beat it 7 times in a row straight through without a game over or continue. After that I moved on to other games.
I was the resident nintendo guru at my elementary school. Other kids would come up and ask my advice on how to get past spots they were stuck on. I’m still proud of that.
What Warps?
I kid. I kid. The warps were set up so you only had to play through a couple (3?) of the levels to get to the end. If you hit the run button all the time and don’t die, you can get through in 5 minutes.
A related story: Hadn’t played Mario since I was a little kid when my friend found her old NES. Plugged it in and started playing Mario. I didn’t remember that much about the game, but found myself hitting the right buttons purely from 18 year old muscle memory. Was kinda freaky to be playing along, feel myself hit the jump button and uncover the 1up that I didn’t know conciously was there.
