What was it, anyway? Is it still up? Can I go there?

Well, since the World Wide Web was [invented](http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/ACHIEVEMENTS/web.html) by Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN, the first website was probably his home page. There’s no mention of it anywhere on the CERN website, at least that I can find, but there’s a [picture](http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/ACHIEVEMENTS/WEB/history.html) of Berners-Lee in front of a monitor displaying what appears to be an early, if not the first, web page. That particular machine is probably long gone by now.

Thank you for answering my question. For a second there I thought it would be pushed off the page.

I especially like this quote from the CERN website referenced above:

“In 1997, with more than 650,000 servers and 1,000 new ones appearing every day, the Web is set to become as familiar as the telephone”

Um, yeah. I think it succeeded. Time to update the web page, I think.
