What was the greatest song of the 1970s?

In my thinking this isn’t just a “best song” of the 1970’s thread, it’s also asking “what is the most quintessential 1970’s song?” and with that in
mind I’d like to nominate this song:

Band On The Run by Wings.

A good, even great song that just oozes “1970’s-ness”.

Stayin’ Alive plays as John Travolta struts down a crowded Brooklyn street.

By definition.

I’ve never heard these songs:

Joy Division - Transmission
Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita
Tom Waits - The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)
Big Star - Thirteen
Television - Venus
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up

I liked “Transmission” and “Thirteen.” I can definitely see the 80’s approaching in “Transmission.”

But of course the answer is “Muskrat Love.” :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t even begin to choose the “greatest” song of the 1970s, you would have to give me some categories or criteria before I could even get started.

What does being his first hit matter? Thunder Road is a much better song

I like CCR but nope.

You’re the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk

I agree with your take on the question. But the correct answer is “Afternoon Delight” by I can’t remember. Starlight vocal band?

If that is the case, man am I glad I was too young to fully experience the decade.

Yes, you are lucky. Very lucky.

Although it wouldn’t win, I’d add Tom Petty’s American Girl to the list for sentimental reasons.

I thought that song was out in the 1980’s and that his only 1970’s hit was “Refugee”?

If only there were some resource to check when Tom Petty’s songs were released.

I kid. “American Girl” was '76.

For those of you who suggested the Ramones should have been in poll, what Ramones song do you think was the best song of the 1970’s, well, in the four years they were recording in the 70’s.

I did not realize howbad the music was in the '70’s until I looked back.

Santana’s "Black Magic Woman

Have You Ever Seen the Rain
The Thrill Is Gone
Steely Dan’s “Do It Again”
