What was the last concert you attended?

My wife (8.5 months pregnant) and I just saw The Joy Formidable at The Earl in Atlanta. Great show at a tiny venue. Met the band and got pictures and autographs :-).

Before that, the last one was Massive Attack at The Fox.

Elton John in Maui. We went to Hawaii for our 10th anniversary, and didn’t even know he was playing while we were on Maui. We were able to score 11th row seats the day of the concert. I was amazed at how great he is! Unbelievable concert!

I’ve heard they have sort of an arena rock sound but done in an indie way, which would be right up my alley if that’s the case - any more details on them?

I was at SXSW in Austin, so I saw a bunch of shows just a couple weeks ago (I missed out on seeing The Joy Formidable down there, in fact). I honestly can’t remember who the actual last band I saw was, but I know I saw Odd Future (sort of a 21st century Wu Tang Clan) and The Black Lips on my last day there, among others.

I honestly don’t remember. It could have been Fleetwood Mack, Götterdämmerung at the local opera or a Swedish band called Eldkvarn.

ETA Of course this would be my latest concert. I hope I haven’t been to my last yet.

Last one was The Police at TD Garden in Boston a few years ago. I haven’t been to many concerts at all lately.

I am seeing Yes on Friday, and I’m hoping to catch Elvis Costello in a few months when he comes to town.

Van der Graaf Generator in Glasgow last Friday!
They’ve thinned down to a 3-piece (no more sax and flute from Jackson) but can still turn it on.
And they played a great version of Meurglys III

Tom Petty at Jiffy Lube Live (worst. venue name. ever.) last summer.

Balkan Beat Box at Dante’s in Portland a few years ago. A supremely kickass show, with a great opener, De Leon, who played Sephardic Jewish rock, which worked surprisingly well.

Oof, it would have to be before I had kids. Over the Rhine at the Exit/In maybe? I did see Barenaked Ladies about ten years ago.

I’ve been to a couple shows in the last year - a taping of NPR’s Says You and a Brian Regan performance - but no concerts I can recall.

The Black Keys back in January. They are damn good live.

Rasputina last summer.

Next band will probably be Rasputina this summer. They were phenomenal last summer and I got to be up close and it was fun to watch and I had a fantastic time. I’m super excited that they’re coming back and totally plan on being there.

George Strait, March 5, 2011 at the Allstate Arena

I’m not a big fan of country music in general, but George Strait has my heart. He was amazing, incredible and I would see him again in a heartbeat.

Like Kolga, Great Big Sea, and it was awesome, but instead of the last date of their current tour, it was the first date!

Don’t own a single CD, not familiar with their music, but found it awesome anyway. And, of course, now I have all the CD’s.

My nephew is a sound tech, who tours with bands. Just back from Australia and SE Asia, actually. He lives in Toronto, but came to town and got us free tickets! Mostly he has worked previously with Death Metal Bands. Much as I wanted to go to a concert and see him in action, I couldn’t do Death Metal! So when we got the call that he was coming with GBS it was the perfect opportunity.

It was also kind of cool to go to the ‘will call’ ticket wicket and tell them we’re on the list. (OMG, we’re those people!)

Gang of Four, The Fillmore, SF, last month.

It’s been awhile, it was either ZZ Top with George Thorogood or Sting with Elvis Costello.

I saw the Pogues and Titus Andronicus at the 9:30 Club in DC earlier this month. An excellent show from both bands.

I’m seeing Titus Andronicus again in April, as well as British Sea Power and Buffalo Tom, so it’s shaping up to be a good month.

Holst’s Choral Symphony at Julliard back in January.

One of the most bizarre pieces of classical music ever composed, legend has it that the reputation of this ruined Holst’s professional career. Also my official introduction to the world of live performance, as I performed it with The Chorus of Westerly at the ripe age of 8 (yes, I was a treble singer!) and hadn’t heard it since.

If you want to count “real” music, I saw Weird Al in Cleveland last September.

How were Gang of Four live at this stage in their career? I’ve never seen them in person, but I passed them up when they came through Chicago in February, even though their first two albums are two of my favorite post-punk works.

I saw Gaelic Storm at the Pittsburgh Irish Fest. It was pouring and it was awesome. IMO concerts are always better in the rain. Well, at least if it’s warm out they are.

I can’t remember what was more recent, Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt or Billy Joel & Elton John.

Lyle Lovett is a twit and his music is subpar. He would periodically take breaks to talk to Hiatt, who really didn’t want to talk and just played to play and sing. The venue wasn’t good; the acoustics were all off, but Hiatt was magic.

Billy Joel & Elton John was nuts. We were the youngest people there by 20 years but we had a blast. One of the piano stages rotated (this is in Cleveland, BTW) and they both had dueling grand pianos at one point. Elton couldn’t hit his high notes and Joel obviously was on something but they loved being there and the crowd adored them.
