By 1917, all but one of the males on the island had died, some in a failed attempt to sail to the mainland and fetch help. The lighthouse keeper, Victoriano Álvarez, found himself the last man on Clipperton island, along with 15 women and children. Álvarez promptly proclaimed himself king and began a rampage of rape and murder, before being killed by one of the recipients of his attentions, the widow of garrison commander Captain Ramón Arnaud. On July 18, 1917, almost immediately following Álvarez’s death, four women and seven children, the last survivors, were picked up by the US Navy gunship Yorktown.

You gotta wonder about the sort of situation and state of mind at which you must arrive to declare yourself king. Do you think everyone had to start calling him “Su Alteza”?

Second place winner is BERING ISLAND

Google has some really detailed satellite photos of the island on a clear day. In one of the sttlements, Nikol’skoye, there appear to be about 100 structures or so, all with gray rooftops, except for two. One is bright, bright orange, and the other bright purple. They are right next to each other.

The building with the orange roof looks like either an apartment block or a school, judging by these photos:

I can’t find any photos of the purple-roofed building. Lots of photos of seals and berries, though.
