I was a [Trojan](http://www.bloomdistrict206.org/athletics/football.htm) warrior and believe me, that was odd enough, but [These](http://www.fisher.k12.il.us/webpage/sports/fisher_bunnies_track_and_field.htm) downstate kids had it worse though. ---

A Bucaneer - yes, that’s right, a pirate; the mascot was someone who dressed up like a pirate, complete with eyepatch. The team logo is a Bucaneer head although they do use a skull and crossbones from time to time. ---

My high school team were the Crusaders, and the mascot was a knight. Last month, the forces of PC determined that the image of a Crusader was “potentially offensive to Muslims” and, despite an overwhelming vote on the part of the students, the school board dropped the team name and mascot. Asshats. ---

I taught at a school whose nickname was the “Red Raiders”. I’m stunned that they’ve gotten away with still using that these days, given that the graphic is [an ugly hook-nosed Indian on the warpath](http://imagesinice.tripod.com/RedRaidersLogo.jpeg). ---

Booker T. Washington Hornets (Tulsa, OK). Our sports teams were usually really good. And our school seal depicted a hornet standing up on his two hind legs, brandishing four fists with boxing gloves on them. ---

We were the Patriots, again fashioned after a Revolutionary War Minuteman. I guess to be PC they’ve had to take away his musket. Maybe he’s armed with Nerf balls or something now. ---

Barstow (Calif.) Riffians. If you’re asking WTF a Riffian is, you weren’t alone. As it turns out, it is a nomadic tribe from the Sahara desert and, coincidentally, the focus of a bad operetta in the 1920’s. The 20’s was when our high school was founded. Coincidence? I think not. Especially when our fight song was taken from this operetta. Fortunately, it was a kick-ass song. After California’s Prop 13 killed off adequate public school funding (sorry, editorial there), our two high schools merged and we had to come up with a new mascot. Originally we decided on Desperados, then after a few parents got huffy over being named “desperate” we became The Aztecs. And then immediately regretted not being the Jedi Knights since this _was_ 1977 and we had a legacy of naming ourselves after something from, ahem, “the arts.” ---

The Tigers. Not too bad… you’d think. But they made the school colors brown and orange. Not a good combination. Most teams either had white and brown uniforms, which a bit of orange to accent. Or orange and white, with brown accents. Or went whole hog with amost all brown and orange, and then just revelled in the ugliness. ---

It’s not so much a mascot for my high school as an identity. We’re not represented by a geyhound, we are the greyhounds. I’m kind of surprised that the whole school (all 4000 students and hundreds of faculty members) is that delusional. I really wish we had one like a door. A wyvern would be pretty cool, though. Yes, I am using present tense. I’m still in high school. ---

\*\*A Cardinal \*\*was our mascot, nickname was **Blackshirts**. Way back when, our colors were and still are Red & black. There were many other schools with the same colors, so we always wore black shirts to distinguish ourselves. Hence our nickname, The Blackshirts. Now I’m no expert with history, but i believe Blackshirts were fascists under Mussolini, so rather than taking that stance, we choose Cardinals. Whew! We also got teased when we put our nickname of the nickname, Shirts(Go Shirts!), on our clothes. ‘Shirts’ on our shirts wasn’t so bad, but ‘Shirts’ on our shorts…Oh shit… ---
