What was your part in the grade school play?

In 4th grade, I played the Artful Dodger in our schools production of Oliver. I sang “Consider Yourself” with a british accent.

I also played Jesus in a church Christmas play.

Like I wasn’t feeling old enough today. When I was in fourth grade, Clinton had just finished law school and moved back to Fayetteville to teach at U. of A. law school.

Grade Two I played the lead in Do You Believe In Fairies. Contrary to popular opinion wearing tights in front of a large crowd had no poor long-term effects (that I’ve noticed).

Grade Three (the sequel) saw me play an argonaut of sorts in a bastardised version. I was kind of Jason but in a non-competitive play where everyone had a bit.

The next role was Steve Bullnack in Paint Your Wagon (though originally I was to play Jake the bar owner but both the original actor and understudy went down the afternoon of performance so I had two hours to learn the part and songs - piece of cake).

Pablo in Viva Mexico with broken leg.

Charlie in Where’s Charley.

And the cream of the crop: Snoopy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

Not that I was really part of the drama crowd at school. I actually just did the stuff. In fact I was the enigmatic lone wolf at school who didn’t quite fit in. Off stage I was very quiet.

And now look at me…

Wow. I think we had all of three plays during my entire grade school career, grades kindergarden through 8.

But then my daughter, currently in grade 7, has been in probably 10 or more plays, concerts, assemblies, etc.

Maybe I’ve just blocked out the memories of mine.

neuroman, why thank you oh so very much, I feel so special now.

Was this the Broadway play based on the ever popular thread of Ask the Gay Guy?

We didn’t have school plays in Elementary school, we did [sarcasm} expansive [/sarcasm] musical numbers involving the entire grade singing some old outdated song.

2nd Grade we sang " I’m an Old Cow Hand" ( I still have the cowboy hat, too.)

4th Grade we sang " Skip To My Lou"

6th Grade show was cancelled do to Sr. Patrica Marie having Surgery. ( It’s not like she did anything like sing, dance or even the moon walk.)

8th Grade we (The Girls) sang " I feel so Pretty" Boys sang " Their ain’t nothing like a Dame"

I also gave a performance on stage with my clarinet that would have stunned a deaf elephant. Had the rest of the band ceased playing it would have been discovered that Shirley did not know a) how to read music b) know where her fingers go on the clarinet but c) could make an ear peircing squeal that could shatter glass. I clearly remember thelook on my mothers and brothers’ collectively stunned faces in the crowd at the raw talent I showed in front of the entire gymnasium at Our Lady Of Perpetual Guilt. I retired from my musical career that night, at the pinnacle of my debacle.

I did, however, that same night, after singing and playing my garage sale clarinet, appear on stage ( I kid you not) as a glow in the dark dancing glow worm. We danced in nuclear green leotards with matching bathing caps that tied under the chin and twirled flash lights.

This last bit of information won’t hurt my bid for President, will it?
