What We Do In The Shadows

If you like Taika Waititi movies, some people are fond of Eagle vs. Shark, although it’s a little too smug and hip for my tastes. Boy, on the other hand, which he directed and starred in, is fun and sweet and and full of soul.

I went to Uni with Stuart, he went out with one of my close friends for a few years. But that was like 20 years ago, and I was watching this film going…I know that actor. What else has he been in?..No, I actually feel like I really do know that guy…Wait, it’s Stuart!

Good movie as well.

We are very different, you and I.
Perhaps not so different, because I too thoroughly enjoyed this movie, but I can’t imagine self-interrupting a viewing of a movie that I am enjoying to post about it on a messageboard.
Whatever works for you. Just saying, this is very strange to me.

ZING!

Rented this from Redbox over the holidays. Hilarious.

Fave bit: Vladislav trying to compel somebody, ANYBODY, to let him in. “See me.” He finally knocks on the window to get the guy’s attention.

Man, I hated that film! It was like the execrable Napoleon Dynamite - a film by the cool kids pretending to be outsiders, with no understanding of why outsiders are outsiders.

We KISS in the shadows, don’t we?

Pretty much, yeah. It’s kind of clever, but cold and smug and ultimately fairly repellent. I think it was Waititi making the kind of film he thought he was supposed to make as an “indie rom-com”. Boy, on the other hand, is the polar opposite, very warm and genuine. It’s about a boy growing up in a small Maori community on the East Coast back in the 80s, and is basically a character piece with some lovely performances. Waititi following his heart, basically.

And a sequel has been announced, We’re Wolves.

It should be fun, but it will be so hard to capture the magic of the first one. I hope they can do it.

I visited my mom. She had some movies on the Tivo for me. I read the title and description and wasn’t expecting much.
Boy, was I wrong. As has been said, the film was consistently hilarious and had well-developed characters you could care about.

“Do you like the psketti?”
“Well, I don’t usually eat it cold.”
“You’re eating worms!”

“Yes, I stole that bit from Lost Boys. It’s still fun though.”

The title is so stupidly awesome.

Excellent. Time for some cautious optimism.

Yay!

Comedies are hard for me, and I find FoC smug and annoying so I wasn’t expecting much from What We Do but I loooooved it and will definitely see the sequel.

And a TV spin-off has been announced, Paranormal Event Response Unit, which follows the cops about. So stoked for this, but not sure why the article thinks it wouldn’t be released outside NZ.

Yeah… this guy totally sounds like a cool kid.
