What weapon should I use to hunt a Tyranosaur?

The M-79 has been retired, replaced by the M-203:

<snip>
(1) High-explosive dual purpose (HEDP) round. This round has an olive drab aluminum skirt with a steel cup attached, white markings, and a gold ogive; it penetrates at least 5 cm (2 inches) when fired straight at steel armor. It arms between 14 and 27 meters, and it causes casualties within a 5-meter radius
<snip>

I don’t think that a T-Rex’s skull was equivalent to 2" of steel.
OTOH, since it’s a single-shot weapon, with a ~ 6 sec reload time, I wouldn’t want to volunteer to test its bone penetrating capabilities.

That old saw.
Some jamoke saw an unusual formation of fossilized ganglia on a collection of bones, and theorized that it was an ‘auxiliary brain’, to control motor function a hundred or so feet way from the pea-sized lump of ganglia up front.
The theory was dismissed, except among those who read it in Sci Am years ago, and cling to it. It has to be true, they read it in a reputable source.
That’s why thay call it theory!

The boobs are not optional.

Now that the T-rex’s have air superiority, it becomes obvious that diploomacy is the best option. Economic warfare is our only hope. That, and Americal Television.

Bah. T-Rex’s in F-14s means they are little more than dragons. I saw Reign of Fire. We just wait until dusk and then we hit them with searchlights and M-203s, railguns, or whatever.

And some rather atrocious spelling.

:smiley:

More on the M-203:

The M-79 has been “retired” as a T/O weapon for Infantry, but is still available to military units, and certainly to the discriminating Dino hunter. But these ranges make me squeamish.

God dammit Jet Jaguar, are you serious? You are an idiot. Were you born without a clue, or did you lose it sometime later in life? I hope it’s the latter because I don’t see how someone as stupid as you could get by on your own. Jack Horner and Robert Bakker are pop stars only interested in selling dinosaur books to kids, nobody in the scientific community take them seriously. You probably look to Dr. Phil for psychology advice too, I bet. :rolleyes: The idea of a “sacral brain” as you call it was largely discredited long ago. That is like saying “brontosaurus lived in water”. The bulge is merely a nerve junction and nothing more. Only someone who is severely mentally deficient or perhaps a very small infant would believe otherwise. Try picking up a book that was written within the last 30 years, you f*n moron!

Back to the topic, I would use a big-ass .50 caliber sniper rifle like an M82. These are used to take out light vehicles like jeeps and trucks and are routinely fired at targets 1500+ yards away, which is where I would be standing BTW :). I would aim for the chest because you are bound to hit something vital there. We still have a pretty good idea of where the major organs ought to be even though soft tissue practically never fossilizes. Darwin’s Finch already linked to the one known case.

Copper Pin, take some incredibly good advice from a well-meaning bystander and spend some more time perusing these boards. You will find that the rude, arrogant, and dismissive tone of your 6th post is generally welcome only in the “BBQ Pit” forum.

You will also find that those members, including newbies such as yourself, who continue to be a pain-in-the-@%* have a very short lifespan on these boards.

Sorry guys, stupid newbie mistake. I’m used to newsgroups where occasional flames are expected, sometimes even encouraged when it’s deserved like it is here. I’m a serious paleontology buff and I couldn’t let something so ignorantly wrong go unchallenged on a board that fights ignorance.

Thanks for the advice I consider this a lesson learned. Really I am sorry and a bit embarrassed. I’m not done with Jet Jaguar because something he said in another thread pissed me off but this time I’ll take it to the BBQ Pit.

Personally, I’d strongly consider aiming for the pelvis, with something like a Black Talon round. Shatter it, and you won’t have to run all that fast. And it’s a much simpler target than the heart or brain.

Black Talon rounds shatter into multiple fragments to cause vicious tissue damage. They are not good for breaking bone.

That’s why you are now Dino-Chow, **E-Sabbath **. :slight_smile:

Why not challenge Rex to an arm wrestling contest? With those pathetic little forearms, he’s gonna lose, and then die of embarrassment !

Hardly, Dragline. They only look small, in comparison to the rest of him. Compared to you, they are about as big as your arms, and more heavily muscled.

Of course, arm movement was rather limited (not a lot of rotation ability, for example), which might just give you an edge. But then, even if you did win, he’d probably just eat you so as to make sure you couldn’t tell any of your friends about it…

I would use a TRANSMOGRIFIER!

Just turn that T-Rex into a mouse and then…

STOMP!

Problem solved.

We need some kind of a… deBIGulator! With the shrinking, and the shooting, and the hey hey hey!

I’d like a more authoratative cite than a random, unattributed post.

Actually, since you’re the one making the ridiculous claim, I’d like to see your cites, kay?

But, to show what a good guy I am, let’s start with personal experience.

The black talon, like the hydrashok, is nothing more than a fancy hollowpoint. It is designed to mushroom better than other hollowpoint rounds. The mission of a hollowpoint is to expand on impact with the target, creating a larger wound cavity, and effectively delivering a larger caliber bullet from the same weapon.

I have been shooting since age 4, and I have fired a great many hollowpoints, including black talons. They were NOT designed for fragmentation - they were designed specifically to maximize energy transfer and damage to soft tissue. And even fired into hard packed dirt, they rarely fragment. Dirt is much harder and denser than muscle.
