What were the cigarette, cigar and pipe smokingist TV shows ever?

Other than CNR’s pipe and maybe Brett’s cigarettes, I think of Match Game as much more the drinkingest between tapings shows. They always passed off the drinking like it was a joke but I’m convinced Dawson was lit up about 2/3 of the time.

Not just CNR & Brett (sorry for the music).

There was an American version of Absolutely Fabulous starring Jean Smart in which she smoked those extra long brown cigarettes in almost every scene. That would have been in the 90s.

I don’t watch The Sopranos, but I caught an episode* last night and this very thing happened. Tony’s son (I think) lit up a cigarette when he exited a car to check into a hotel, took one puff as he walked all of 5 paces to the hotel door, then stubbed it out.

*It was on A&E and the main plot concerned this Italian restaurant that was losing business. Apparently one of Tony’s guys ran some sort of AMEX scam where they were lifting American Express card numbers from the restaurant-goers and charging thousands of dollars on them. The restaurant-owner did a little bit of romp 'n stomp on the mafia guy running the scam, whereupon Tony had to take them aside and tell them to fuggid-aboud-it. Good line: “Don’t shit where I eat.”

IIRC AJ (Anthony Jr) didn’t really smoke on the show. If you want to see someone make love to a cigarette, watch just about any scene with Johnny Sac. That man loves his cigarettes.

I have a co-worker who does that walking from one building to the next or walking to the company car. (Usually she takes her own car anywhere so she can smoke in it.) She stubs them out carefully, though, so she can finish smoking them later. She can’t walk outside, no matter how briefly, without lighting a cigarette.

What was so funny about the Lucy shows was that occasionally, for some reason unconnected with the plot, they’d have Fred and Ethel smoke – it was pretty clear that Ethel didn’t really smoke (Fred either). Lucy and Ricky really did but why involve the Mertzes, unless they were jealous of their tobacco teetotaling and wanted to contractually kill them.

Another example of a clear non-smoker that supposedly smokes like a chimney is Bennie, George Lopez’ mom on the long-running hit TV show of the same name. She clearly didn’t smoke at all and, yep, they had an episode where she was desparately trying to give it up.

Columbo, I just can’t picture the detective without that raincoat and the cigar.

For a while, Harmon Rabb smoked cigars on JAG, although at some point on the show, he ends up quitting. I think he does end up spending more of the show as a non-smoker than he does as a smoker.

Perry Mason smoked quite a bit. His detective, Paul Drake, seemed to be smoking every time he was on screen.

Well, there was of course the Cigarette-Smoking Man on The X-Files…and as several people here know, I think, the actor who played him did not smoke in real life, or at least not when he was on the show.

For more recent shows, on “Mad About You” Jaime and “King of Queens” Carrie both smoked in some episodes.

Yes, and of course the actor who played Paul Drake died of some smoking-related illness.

How about Adriana? IRF, she smokes like a chimney.

Kinda late in the thread to be mentioning Patty & Selma in The Simpsons.

Heck, if I had a boyfriend like Christafuh I’d smoke like a chimney too; I’d probably even do drugs.

Wait.

At least in the first several episodes of Homicide, most of the detectives smoke a lot, even in the squad room. Pembleton, Bayliss, and Felton seem to have cigarettes dangling from their mouths or hands all the time, and Bolander has a cigar pretty often, although he seems to chew on it as much as smoke it. IIRC, both Bayliss and Pembleton later quit.

Also, we can’t forget perhaps the pipe-smokinest show ever, Popeye.

I watched a Seinfeld retrospective, and the cigars. Every one on that show was shown smoking a cigar at least once.

All of the prisoners on Hogan Heroes were shown smoking a lot. It made the show more realistic.

They dedicated an episode to Cramer’s smoking lounge/room.
