What were the most "risque" shows of the 1960s?

I do realize this was from 5 years ago. Anyway, I still think the Star Trek kiss is the first true interracial kiss. It was a real romantic (albeit forced by a godlike being) kiss. The Nancy Sinatra/Sammy Davis kiss is a quick peck that she gave to her daddy’s friend who is like an uncle. It’s at the end of this clip but watch it all for all of its goofy 60s-ness.

I suppose that one could add Newmar’s Catwoman and Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl to the “Ginger vs. Mary Ann,” “Bailey vs. Jennifer,” and “Betty vs. Veronica” debates. Regardless, both Newmar and Craig looked pretty damn good as Catwoman and Batgirl, respectively.

As a child, I really enjoyed the Batman show. Lots of action, evil villains, dastardly plots to get rid of Batman and Robin. Pow! Biff! Socko! Great comic book adventure. What was there not for a kid to like?

Always wondered why my Dad liked the show too, especially when Catwoman was the villain, or Batgirl was in an episode. Now, I know why.

I loved Batman during the first half-season (it debuted in January 1966), but was very disappointed to see its quality go down subsequently. It’s now hard to imagine the Bat-craze that swept the US that spring, and the closest thing to it since came with Star Wars in May 1977.

Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt, and Michelle Pfeiffer were all good Catwomen, but Julie Newmar was the ne plus ultra in that that capacity!

Did you know, BTW, that Julie designed and sewed that tight-fitting costume herself?

I did not, but thanks for the info.

I remember the scene in “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar” when Patrick Swayze (as the character Vida Boeheme) spots the publicity photo of Julie Newmar signed to Wong Foo on the restaurant wall, and says, “Oh, Miss Julie, you are statuesque and you were the only Catwoman.”

Really, she was.

I was watching that when it actually aired. When I saw it some months ago when TCM aired it, it appeared to me that Sammy’s photographer character was played as somewhat effeminate, so it’s possible that was to mitigate any controversy. But I could be misremembering.

She’s a hoot on Columbo

That claim sounds a little sus in the ears of this garment-sewing hobbyist who knows something about the technical difficulties involved in making a form-fitting full-body costume in a negative-ease material. And indeed, it appears to be considerably exaggerated.

Even if she had the ability, Newmar wouldn’t have had time to design and sew such a difficult costume from scratch, given her description of how quickly things progressed from her being offered the part to the start of shooting:

Fascinating. Thanks for adding all those details; I had no idea the story was so complex. :+1:

Trivia challenge: What breaking news event interrupted the broadcast of “The Purr-fect Crime,” causing viewers across the US to phone their local TV stations and complain?

Hint: The date was 16 March 1966.

I knew it had something to do with the Gemini space program, but I had to look it up to find out exactly what;

The Gemini VIII capsule docked with another craft for the first time in space exploration. Unfortunately, the docking was not stable, and the crew had to perform an emergency separation.

FYI.

Correct!

History would have been changed considerably, had the astronauts been unable to disengage from the target vehicle and return safely to the Earth, since the mission commander was Neil Armstrong.

I was watching Batman that evening and can still tell you exactly when the news broke. The Dynamic Duo had just driven into the alley behind the Gato and Chat Fur Company. (And yeah, I was pretty pissed off too!)

I can also tell you at exactly which point The Time Tunnel was interrupted with news of the Apollo I fire on 27 January 1967.

Some of the made for tv movies pushed boundries. I remember House on Greenapple Road 1970 had bloody rooms and a TMI backstory after a murder. Janet Leigh was cast a few years after getting slashed in Psycho. I was in junior high and still vividly remember House on Greenapple Road.

Gargoyles 1972 featured Jennifer Salt in this costume. She wore it throughout the movie. It also made a vivid impression in my young memory.

Racy for that tv era

IIRC Beaver didn’t buy the gift. His mom did, but then after wrapping it, mixed it up with a slip she’d bought for herself. Beaver inadvertently took the slip as the gift, but was too embarrassed to give it to the teacher. He gave her a greeting card or something instead. When June and Ward realized what had happened, June didn’t realize what the big deal was. Ward had to explain how embarrassing it must have been for Beaver.

I was going to mention this show from the early 60s. While it was a comedy, Mary Tyler Moore pushed some boundaries for women by not wearing the usual hausfrau attire. She made Capri pants all the rage and generally eschewed frilly dresses. She was also very pregnant during one season, which I don’t recall seeing on any other shows of the time. She stood up to her husband and even argued with him, the hussy.

I’m not exactly sure which years he was on, but what about Benny Hill?

I can’t believe we’ve gotten this far without mentioning The Avengers:

Julie Newmar may have really filled out a catsuit, but it was Emma Peel who started the whole thing!

I retract that statement: It was actually started by Cathy Gale, but it would be decades before her episodes were broadcast in the US.

Enhh…Im pretty sure by then any number of Hammer Horror films could be seen on TV featuring many a buxom beauty.

And I don’t know what year I saw The Dunwich Horror on TV with Sandra Dee in her near nude sheerness but it would have been around then

Please back on topic and ignore the fact @aceplace57 somehow doesn’t understand that the 70s are not the 60s.

Sorry, I forgot the narrow date restrictions. I won’t cross it again.
