My statement before this was that the “respect” explanation actually derives from a class-based system. As further evidence, I was saying those who use it tend to still use it as a way to look down on their “inferiors” based on how they dress. So, while they may not adhere to the earlier system, they are essentially still classist. It’s still about looking down on others, rather than actually being about avoiding disrespect. ---

I don’t know anyone who has expressed a “you’re dressed like a _peasant_” mentality. I’ve heard slut, stoner, hippie, punk, nerd, millenial, etc. All derogative, but not what comes to mind when I think of classism. Who’s gonna get hired the guy in a wrinkled suit who smells bad or the decently dressed guy who’s clean? Of course we judge people on attire. Until we’re all wearing Emperor’s new clothes that’s how it’s gonna be. Sad, but people see what you have on or don’t have on. And, yes you must teach toddlers the clothes have to stay on. I promise they’d go nekked as much as you’d let them. ---

I wouldn’t think so. Unless you’re a pilot and the Pilot of the plane has a heart attack. Then I’ll bet no one cares what you’re wearing. All in all, it pays to dress for the occasion if you’re able. Flying on a commercial flight seems to beg for comfort. IMO. It’s bad enough without it. If you’re lucky enough to fly first class hopefully you won’t be in there with a rock band or a rapper who doesn’t have their own jet yet. Or some rich lady with a bunch of frou frou perfumery and two Pekinese puppies. ---

I usually dress decently for flights because I think it might make it slightly easier to sail through security, passport control and customs. To me, it’s not about showing respect, it’s about not drawing the attention of assholes in uniform who can ruin my day. ---

I dress comfortably but not as if I’m at home lounging on the couch. Comfortable jeans and t-shirt generally. ---
